with all those discussions of DQs of winning photos due to dates that are outside of the allowed submission period, maybe it would make sense to (a) have the date blank and make the photog fill the date out (i just realized that i submitted my entry yesterday w/out ever changing those fields because they were prepopulated. luckily, i actually took my photo yesterday). (b) give a warning that a date is outside of the allowable date range where applicable.
i realize that it would still be easy to cheat if you wanted to cheat, but it would catch the people that are just making an honest mistake of not reading the rules and hopefully they won't submit an illegal photo.
at least it won't hurt ...

I like the way the date defaults - I tend to submit on the same day I take a shot and it saves me having to work out what day it is : )
Plus, it makes it a lot more difficult to enter an invalid date than a valid one, so any mistake is likely an honest one from somebody who has misunderstood the rules.
Could the dropdowns not be coded to only display valid dates for the challenge?

except my point is that, if it is prepopulated, it is easily overlooked, especially if you haven't realized that the date the photo was taken is an important piece of information on dpc...

I guess I just don't get why people would want to cheat. I mean, c'mon... to win a gif ribbon! (Not taking anything away from that,... just that the stakes aren't very high). For the other set of people who clearly make a mistake, it should be easy to verify. For those that "misunderstand", I would like to re-emphasize the need to please re-read the rules of the site. |

i was hoping that, by having to put in the date, and receiving a message if it is outside of the allowable range, all the honest people that make a mistake and don't read the rules would be made aware of the rules and wouldn't submit that particular photo in the first place.
since i'm assuming that all submissions that actually populate a date outside of the range (which is how we find out after the voting is over) are making an honest mistake (and aren't just too dumb to cheat efficiently ;), this might actually help some people w/out hindering anyone else.

Yes, Franziska, I agree with you. I think it could stop some. I just don't see an easy answer. Thank you for your input on it though. Idea sharing is always productive, and I like yours. :) |
