I have never been there so it is hard for me to tell but both choices you lsited look good. They both offer camping and cabins to meet everyones needs and the cost is very reasonable. I could go with either. Maybe someone who knows location could comment. |

I'm being a nitpicker and easily could be wrong so feel free to ignore this but I believe that, though partly on the border, most of Monument Valley is on the Arizona side. That includes the Mintons in the above picture. The tall rocks in the far background, I think, are on the Utah side. :) I think! :) |
You may be right, the final main road into the entry is split diagonally with the border of Arizona and Utah. So I was standing in Arizona and taking a picture into Utah. So I guess I covered both side ;) |

The two places I posted in the 1st entry seem to look solid. Jemison, now that I know we have some that want to be very civilized, some that want mattresses and some that like the sky overhead, I'll call and check availablity for those options.
Again, we'll make our decision this week, so that we can each make our own reservations. Staying at the same place would be ideal.
BTW, jemison - you're not an old fart until you're 20-30 years older than I am, and you ain't! |

Becky,
Steve and I will be in Vegas for the next 2 weeks at a show, so if you don't hear from us, not to worry we will both be there. I will camp and it depends on if Steve's wife comes to what he does (not meaning to speak for him).

My brother-in-law is in the process of buying a motel in Monticello. Don't know too much about it, but if it goes through I can try to work a real good rate. Only issue is it's about 50 miles south of Moab, more in the indian country and less red rocks and arches.

And Natural Bridges National Monument, The Valley of the Gods, The Moki Dugway, Grand Gulch, Bullet Canyon, Fish and Owl Creek Canyons, Hovenweep...I love them all!! Nothing less than around Moab...more if you are willing to hike to see them. Big Man Panel. Lots of ruins and glyphs out on the Grand Gulch.
Look here for some more ideas, resources

I've done a bit of calling to check availability for Moab. There are 8 places that have cabins and camping. I've left messages/e-mail with 5 of them. I've reached 3 which are booked up with a jeep group, family reunion and a snow-ski group (who indicated the groups were big.)
It sounds like we'll want to grab reservations if/when I find a place that can accomodate us. I'll keep you posted as I get return calls.
Phantom - the possible motel sound good. When would be have a definite answer? We probably better set things up somewhere in the meantime to be safe.
I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you want cabins (mattress) or tent sites. I did find a place 15 miles south of Moab with 3 cabins and plenty of area for tents - but I don't think that's enough for the mattress lovers.
As a back-up plan, the place in Torrey (Capitol Reef NP area) did have cabins and tent spaces available then (as of last week.)
I haven't check out accomodations in Monticello. That could be an option as Phantom pointed out.
Just got another call back - they have 2 cabins available, no RV, but plenty of tent space.

Becky - I'm a matress guy. Is it the Riverside that still has cabins? I see it is still listed on your original post.
I know they always have a major 4x4 event in Moab every spring, normally the last of April. Looks like this year it may be the first of May.
I'll try and do a little checking tomorrow. Could you list the places you have already checked with?
BTW - here is another site if you have not seen it as yet

Oh Man, I would love to meet up with you guys on this one. I will mark the dates and see if I can get away. I would definitely be sleeping on location to catch the sunrise and sunset light.
Will anyone be offended if I̢۪m not around the entire time. I tend to get lost when there are so many things to shoot.
Will there be some planned meet-ups, meals or excursions scheduled so we can all get together at the same place and time? Campfire? |

YA HOO! We found a place with cabins and tent spaces available for all of us AS OF TODAY.
Each person is responsible for making his/her own reservations. I've summarized the info in the 1st entry and I'll add it in this post. I'll also PM everyone who has listed an interest.
We'll be staying at the Riverside Oasis Campground and RV Park at 1871 N. Highway 191, Moab Utah. It's just outside of one NP and close to the other. I think it will make a good base.
Place to stay:
We'd like to stay at the same spot. We've got availablity for camping and cabins on same site://riversideoasis.com/. Please call and make your reservations IMMEDIATELY. Things are filled up all over Moab. You will need to give the owners your name, address, phone number & credit card to hold the site for you. (Let her know you're with the DPChallenge Group) The e-mail is roasis@citilink.net The phone numbers are: (Toll free) 877-285-7757 or 435-259-3424. Make the reservations even if you're not sure - you can cancel, as long as it's early enough (I believe - check to make sure)
Generally, we're looking at checking in on May 5th, staying the 6th and 7th and checking out on the 8th. (Your plans may vary.)
Please PM or post when your reservations are made (I feel like a momma duck who wants to know her ducklings are in a row) or not (for those oppositional defiant, I-do-my-own-thing people.)

Salt Lake City, Utah airport is probably the closest major airport. There are a number of us driving from SLC and you could carpool if interested. Las Vegas would be another possiblity, as would Denver. |

Woohoo!!! I called and made reservations today for a cabin. However, the clerk had no idea what the dpchallenge group was. I'm so looking forward to this. Thanks for putting the trip together Becky.

Denver is around 5 hours away. Las Vegas is about 7 hours.

I have placed all of their cabins (6 total - 2 taken by DCPers), the apartment (already reserved by DPCer), 1 RV site and 6 tent sites on hold for our group. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before.
The clerk NOW knows who DPChallenge is.
I'm worried that this might not be enough cabins, but the only other place with more cabins (Moab Valley RV & Campground) will get back to me "within the week," and who knows if they're available. (KOA was an option, but only had a few more cabins, was more expensive, was further away from the parks and looked pretty desolate.
Let me know if you think I need to keep looking.

Not too shabby. Is that to SLC? And does that mean you're coming? So far no one else from the east coast has given a yes (although a few have left some drool on the thread.) |

My vision of this GTG looks alot like organized chaos. My basic idea is to have an agenda of places to go each day with a morning outing and an evening outing. The weekend would look like this:
Friday: Early morning - on the road. Lunch & check in. Afternoon/evening outing: (Shoot the area, working the afternoon light. Get to final area and set up for last light and sunset. Head back to get sleep and food.)
Saturday: Morning outing (Up before the sun, get to are, set up before dawn, shoot and then follow the light, shooting through the morning hours.), Mid-day respite (Rest, eat, visit, on your own, scouting out areas if needed,) Afternoon/evening outing
Sunday: Morning outing, Mid-day respite (I plan on visiting the church of my choice), Afternoon/evening outing
Monday: Morning outing, Mid-day check out and on the road.
We have several of you who have indicated you know the area and great places for shooting. I̢۪d love to have you step forward to lead for a day and set the itinerary for the day.
We definitely want to shoot with the light. Many of the posts have given awesome places to see. We̢۪d like to spend lots of time shooting and less traveling or hiking, although some of both may be needed.
I̢۪m sure that we̢۪ll have people that join all the outings and some that want to break off on their own for a while. We̢۪ll also have some that can come for part of the time and others for the whole time.
We̢۪ll need to provide our own breakfast/snack foods. Moab should have plenty of eating establishments. We can play the meals by ear as to whether they̢۪ll be large group, small groups or solo.
So, how does this sound? Brent, NightShy, others; are you willing to take the lead for a day (or outing)?
