It would be great if I could get some good challenge entries with it, but I mainly got it so I could get more action shots of my kids. An entire soccer season last year and after hundreds of photos with my P&S only a couple of half-decent shots. It simply isn't able. I found it extremely annoying and had many thoughts about "accidentally" dropping my P&S & crushing it violently underfoot.
I really want it for zoom-on-action. But this spring I want to get a macro lens too, as I've always envied everyone's bug shots.
Sorry Saintaugust, still can't make the GTG, though I'd love to. I've still got kidlet duty as my wife will be out of town for the day. :-(

Oh yeah...
The filename of my first shot was IMG_0239...
Does that mean this camera has been used? It's supposed to be new.

Thanks.
Do you think the possible 238 clicks is worth mentioning to the folks at Henry's? I'm going back tomorrow for another battery anyway. Everything seemed very fresh out of the box.

I would mention it and try for a discount, that's quite a few customers hands in those 238 clicks. |

Yes, I would definitely mention it. That's not a lot of clicks, but one would wonder if it was "returned" for some reason. Probably just demo'd in the store, but they should have told you that, and a model that's been used should be worth a few bucks off. Maybe they could give you a nice bag for it. See if you can get a LowePro PhotoRunner, that's worth about $35 on Amazon, and it's a nice compact bag, while being large enough for the 350 and two extra lenses.
BTW - Congratulations. Did you get anything besides the kit lens?

What lens did you get with it??? Next time were out if you don't have anything but the kit lens I'll lend you one. Or PM me and come pick it up. And no I will not accept your wife in exchange. :D
The 238 does mean that the camera was used before probably just as a demo but I'd mention it anyway and tell them to give you a brand new one of the battery and grip for free. For the XT I would strongly recommend the grip. |

Did you use a card that had been used in another camera? Sometimes that can carry over the number of frames to the next camera.

| the reference number on photos is from the camera, not the card. It will actually write over pictures if you aren't careful and use multiple cameras with a single card. |

I believe that the camera stores the frame number on the card or indeed simply increments the highest numbered frame on the card to get the next frame number, rather than in some internal memory register. Indeed, when I changed from my 300D to my 20D (using the same card), the first frame was numbered at some 9,000 odd.

How do I find out how many photos have been taken with my XT?
All the files I download start with 001.

I would imagine that you have the file number reset option turned on, so that whenever a card is erased, it starts again at 001. I think you have to set this option to 'continuous'.

Heh, that's the first thing I did, but the date & time were already set... hmmm...
About the clicks, I'll mention that & let the guy know I'll be looking at the camera sideways for a while wondering what's up with the date & clicks already set. I'll see (politely insist) what they can do for me. If I'm not satisfied, I'm not above returning the lot & going somewhere else. I put a brand new card in & formatted it before taking any pics.
I didn't get the kit lense at all, I got the Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC for Canon.

Oh well, it's a mystery.
I just got back from Henry's and tried two other new bodies from unopened boxes. Both already had the date set, so I just said screw it and took one. It started me off at IMG_336. I dunno. Seems perfect, so I'm going to chalk it up to me being ignorant. The sales guy is great, so I just feel bad about being a pain in the butt.
Now if it would just stop raining all the time... Can't wait to shoot!

AJager, file index numbers are stored in camera, not in card.
I have a habit of going around and checking other cameras in the shops and at the shows here and I get all kinds of different numbers on my card.
An example of this is my CF card currently has DCIM\103NCD2X and DCIM\148CANON, where my old S30 only made it to DCIM\128....
I wonder if they could have run the camera through some testing at the factory? It is unusual that they did not reset the device completely before sending out though.
Also, I thought that there were only a handful of images shot in production, not 200+... Weird stuff.
No reason to complain though. It will work just fine. |
