I have a show this weekend, and I need to know how and where to sign my work. In show's and exhibits I've done before I didn't sign my work, but I'm beginning to think that's not a good idea. I own some artworks that are signed in pencil on the matte...is that appropriate? Help! Btw, all of my pictures will be matted and framed. Also...I have matted type, high quality note cards with my pictures also for sale. Do I sign them? How? On the matte? In pencil?
Thanks!
Grayce

I think, and this is totally my personal opinion (spelling), but, signing your work is a personal thing.
I have a custom brush in PS that has my signature that I layer into a pix.
I have seen pencil on mattes at the Getty. I have seen signatures on the back of the pix as well.
I think that it is a personal taste thing, and not a standard thing. Maybe just ask clients 'if' they want a signature, and you decide where to put it.
God, I need a drink after this post.

I don't sell at all, so this is probably worth very little, but I like the look of pencil on matte. I do it that way for everything I wind up framing. I may also write a title on the other side. |

I usually leave white space around the picture, .5" top and sides, .75" at the bottom, between image if I'm matting. In any case I put the title on the left and my signature and date on the right. Here's an example of my black patina leaded copper foil work which I sign with the same convention (sans mat): //www.newfoundlandrepublicimaging.com/pages/information.html
