I am worried about being disqualified. But what I did I think is legal.

If you have an area, on a predominantly black area that is grey. Well if you select that areawith the marquee tool, and then using adjustment layers you either reduce its brightness to black or you use curves in a similar way. This is legal right?

many thanks

Reducing a non-detail area to black is not a problem -- regardless of how it is done (at least I can't think of a way that would be illegal). The only time this becomes a problem is when the area reduced to black has detail in it -- by removing the detail you run the risk or falling afoul of the major elements clause.

For example, a portrait against a black backdrop that isn't uniformly lit will have some areas (as you described) that are grey -- selecting and shifting it all black is legal. However, if that same portrait was taken against a brick wall (with the bricks noticable in the image) shifting the bricks to black may be ruled removing a major element.

I'm assuming it will be understood that this is all based on my understanding of the rules -- but my understanding doesn't vote on DQs.

Also I am confused over the use of bits of artwork or your photos placed in the photo somewhere. This photo is obviously legal. But what isnt legal?
