How do you create this sort of effect, I mean, the crumpled old photo look? I dont mind if its not within the challenge rules because I just wish to do it for my portfolio.
Please share, thanks.

Don't know but would also be interested in finding out how this was done.

can't you just layer a photo of the paper with any other photo? 2 images.
01/18/2006 02:56:30 AM · #4
Thats created by using the layer blend and masks. it's simple and actually if you burn edges like he did, it makes for a stunning representation. i have to loook for some of my examples and i will post later.

Grunge effects can work here as well, I think???
01/18/2006 03:24:17 AM · #8
grunge doesnt work well for this type of imagery. it's mainly a play in layers and blends + masks. I know I had an action for this type of thing but my puter crashed not too long ago and some of my data were wiped clean.

anyway, i will choose a photo and create an example and will post it.

Yeah, the whole Grunge thing is another that I have difficulty mastering.

You could also try PM'img the photographer and asking how he did it. ;)

I think it looks really cool. My big problem is I don't even know what "Burning" does (at least in Photoshop, I know about fire).

Hi Crayon. I did a quick edit (5 minutes or so) to just demonstrate how this process could be achieved.

What do you think? I used one of your images.

That's amazing Rikki! Would you mind being more specific about your steps? Many thanks.

Interesting! So you placed one layer on top of the other, right? Was it a complicated process? Urm... first of all, how did you get the "crumpled old paper" layer? how do you get it transparent enough for use? Sorry, I'm not good with photoshop. Thanks

edit: typo

Ok this will be an edited post but it will give you an idea. I hope this gets across. I am using Photoshop CS2 so I'm not sure what teh equivalent moves are in PSP or similar.

1. First I grabbed your image. Then I searched the web and googled "wrinkled paper" and found this from Shutterstock.

2. Opened Photoshop CS2. Opened Crayon's image. Opened the shutterstock image. Copied the Shutterstock image over Crayon's image. With the wrinkled paper above Crayon's image, I right clicked and selected Layer Blend. I then selected Overlay.

3. Once I had the opacity to where I wanted it, I saved the file into a new jpeg file.

4. open new jpeg file. Duplicate layer. Select Burn tool. Set Range to Shadows at 10% exposure. Burned the wrinkles. I do this again for the Midtones using the same exposure.

5. Change opacity of duplicate layer to whatever you want. Flatten image.

6. That's about it. Don't mind the border. That was an add on that I can explain later. Play with these steps a bit and see where it takes you. Let me know if you get stuck ;)

Thanks Rikki. I tried it on GIMP but could not find the needed layer tools. Maybe I didn't look hard enough, hmm. Anyway, I will try it again on another computer later that has CS2. Thanks for the general outline!

Xenofex from Alien Skin has a "Crumple" filter. I have used their plugins for years.

Here I used it on my recent profile pic...

Wow ken. I never thought having another baby and being a dad again would do this to you.

I thought this image was scary.

I was wrong. Indeed I was wrong.

I just have a few more wrinkles. Did Crayon tell you he's my dad? Maybe you and I were twins, separated after hatching. :)

I've long suspected that both of you are my lost sons.
Here is our old family potrait. You were one of those unmarked eggs in the carton.

Remarkable family resemblence!!

Thanks Rikki and Ken, that was fun! Took a photo of one of those white plastic shopping bags after I'd scrunched it up. Used that as the layer......now I just gotta work on my borders!! :P
