It's no surprise to see flowers dominating "Burst of Color" and "Backlighting" both; they are natural bursts of color, and their petals are tanslucent so they work well in backlighting.
It's called "horses for courses".

No disrespect to the winning images in "Backlighting", I think the ribbons are well earned/deserved. I was surprised to not see something like this (an animal fur shot) in the top ten.

There were a few animal fur shots entered but nothing that had that kind of look.
There was this shot
Not a prairie dog but a similar effect. |

Yep...saw that one. Thought for sure there would be a lion (cheetah, etc...) backlit with a setting sun to win this challenge. Just the first thing I thought of when the challenge initially came up. ;^)
