I brought:
monopod
- mini 27" tripod
- 18-55mm kit lens
- 10-22mm lens
- 75-300mm lens
- 5 gigs of memory
didnt use the wide angle much and ended up buying a storage drive (80 gigs) since i ran out of cards |

Did you end up using the tripod? How many gigs did you end up using? Jpg or RAW? |

Yes I did use the tripod for the Modern marvels shot among others. I shot mainly in RAW so I ended up using about 20 gigs! |

The detailing is exquisite and stunning. |
Futarasan is the temple where you took the icicle shots. The big colourful shrine you're talking about is the Toshogu Shrine with the Yomeimon and Dragon Hall (oh, and the other less-visited one is also colourful). |

Hey don't forget to contact some of our friends over there. It's fun meeting new people and they make for great "tour guides" too ;) |

In light of the Silly Sign Thread, I've decided to upload some of these funny "Engrish" transrations from Japan ;) These were all just shot with a P&S so pardon the quality and lack of "editing" ;)
Here's one found in a restaurant:
At a restaurant's restroom:
At the Tokyo Station;
At the Tokyo Station ticket offices:
At the restroom on-board the Shinkansen (bullet train):
On my way to one of the shrines:
And lo and behold, no cameras and:
But after a full day of shooting, I had to just take a shot next to this delivery "truck":

Rikki, seeing this truck really brought back some memories for me. Forgive me a minute while I reminisce. :)
When we first moved to Okinawa in 1990 95% of the cars were white. You would see a car dealership and there might be 2 or 3 cars that weren't white. By the time we left in 1998 they were starting to get more different colored cars. I swore when I left there I would never own another white car. The cars were so small and funky looking and were disposable because of the harsh salt water. I did have my favorite all time car over there though. It was a white Mazda Familia convertible with a turbo in it. :) I think we only paid $3,000US for it and it was one fun car. With living there 8 years it took a while to get use to driving on the opposite side of the road but it took we even longer to readjust when we came back to the states. The speed limit is so much slower and it took me a while to get comfortable driving on the highways here again.
The festivals/parades were a blast. Talk about brilliant colors. We particapated in several of the tug-a-wars and that rope was hugh. I couldn't believe it the first time I saw it.
The Habu in the Saki bottle...Yuk!
The plastic food samples at the front of the resturants was so funny to me at first.
We lived off base for the first 2 years there. We spoke and read no Japanese at all. We loved going to the PaPa San stores and just looking around. One morning we wanted some jelly for our breakfast. We found what we thought was jelly and after about 10 mins. of trying to ask the man there he finally got it across to us it was some kind of fish jell. :) Glad we found out there rather than on our toast. Their chips and pastries are unbeatable. We were very adventurous in our eating. Our neighbors were wonderful and were always bringing us food. Some wonderful and some was just down right nasty. :)
The people are such kind and gentle people. Things did change some while we were there because of 2 marines who raped a young girl. The locals became a little less friendly to Americans after that. I don't know if mainland Japan is the same but you couldn't own a gun and if you got caught with one you might as well hang it up. This made crimes and murders so minimal. We never even locked our doors at night there. If I could have taken my whole family there I would have loved to just live there the rest of my life. My husband could have gotten a job there after retiring from the military but it's just too far from the rest of our family.
We loved going out a low tide and catching fish. We had 2 aquariums with every kind of tropical fish you can think of and caught them all our selves.
I wish so much that digital cameras had been out then. I did get one of the first ones out and thought it was wonderful. It was an Epson something or another. :) I did shoot some with my Canon AE1 but couldn't really afford a lot of developing so I didn't shoot a lot. We have made a promise to ourselves to one day go back for a visit. I hope it's in the near future.
Thanks again for sharing your wonderful photos and letting me reminisce although it was a little over a min. :)
