I just upgraded to PhotoShop 7 from PS6. And I have noticed that a strange thing is happening. PS7 is now automatically editing my EXIF data originally sourced from my Nikon D1x. I was not aware that the EXIF data could even be edited. I believed that it was restricted or something like that?
When I retrieve my images from my compact flash cards / drive, everything is fine. But, once I edit the image in PS7, some of the key parameters are changed, such as the firmware version of the camera??? It removes the Nikon version and inserts Photoshop.
As a result, my Nikon 5 viewer / EXIF reader no longer is able to read or display the edited file and I am challenged to retrieve the image parameters needed to upload the picture for competition at DPC. I was able to get the data from the source image, as long as I did not overwrite it. As these files are so large, I often overwrite them to save hard drive capacity. This has never concerned me as the EXIF data always travelled intact with the image. Is this just me, or is anyone else experiencing this problem too? |

PS 7 does some other funny things too, including something with TIFF files which makes them twice as large. There was an article about the problems sometime last year in Electronic Publishing (trade magazine) ranting about some of the problems -- I can't remember them all or the issue right now, but I'll try and find it.
I think it will also discard the EXIF entirely if you use the "Save For Web" feature, but retain it if you use the standard "Save As" command -- or maybe it's the other way around.
I have found no compelling reason to use higher than PS 5.0, although I have them all at work and use it about daily...
I also try to burn all original frames to CD-R as soon as possible... |

But of course.. That is the whole point: If you are saving for web, you want the image to be as small as possible, and EXIF information is just extra information, taking up space.

May be worth trying the 7.0.1 update from www.adobe.com? |

you should keep the original unedited version for review on DPCHALLENGE if someon suspects you of cheating...
what I do is open the photo, crop, resize, sharpen, colors, ect, and save that image for web. Then you can see the EXIF info of the original photo...

Thanks, I performed the upgrade as you suggested. After reviewing the documentation pertaining to these new 7.0.1 enhancements, I did not see anything specific to my EXIF problem, but I will let you know after I try it out. Cheers, Michael |
