Tried to get a better shot, but could never catch the fly by in time.
01/17/2006 02:35:25 PM · #2
cool shot did u catch them at an air show or did they just happen to fly by. I have the same lens and camera and at a air show I went to I was able to catch some shots of jets and choppers. With that lens it just has to be bright out and I set my camera to shoot on the "TV" setting and choosed a really fast speed.

But those jets are so fast if you look away for a split second they are gone.

Kinda cool, the cloud directly underneath the lead jet almost looks like a plane itself. ;^)

Just a fly by, the second jet is actually cloned in.

I like to use a single focus point on planes, and of course longer glass helps

These are 2 of my Snow Bird shots (more in my portfolio) taken at the Halifax Int. Airshow. This was the straw that broke the camels back for my camera...It was an HP C945 and had the delightful trait of a viewfinder that would lock up for about 1/3 of a second every few seconds which made it the most frustrating camera in the world for action shots.

Did someone say Jets?

Here is an F-35 pretty rare to get a picture of this.

Thunderbirds

Air Force Tribute the two planes are F-86 Sabre and F-15 and the three planes are F-15, F-16 and a P-51 Mustang

The planes in the air were at the Jones Beach air show and the McGuire AFB open house. The F-35 I shot on the flight deck of the air craft carrier JFK in New York City back in May at Fleet week.

The secret in getting the shot at an air show is to anticipate the fly by and have a fast camera.

I used to shoot with a Nikon Coolpix 5700; in a fly by I would get one shot off and then wait for the camera to save it.

With my Olympus E-1 I can shoot 4fps so a fly by now I get like 12 shots. Out of those 12 I get one or two really classic shots. I carry four 1 gig cards with me and at SHQ I can get about 270 images on one card. If I shoot SHQ and RAW I can get about 100 images on one card. At an air show from the static displays and the flights I could shoot almost 600 images in a day.

If your camera can't focus between shots, then set it to manual and focus it where the planes will pass at something the same distance away on the ground. That makes one less thing to do as they come by.

Also hold the camera with your arms against your body and plant your feet firmly in a comfortable position, you are going to be there a few seconds, look to your right or left depending on which way they are coming from then as they get to a point where you are going to start, hold your breath and follow them in your view finder leading them by a little, just twist your body smoothly and shoot as you pan. Don't try to stay in one spot and wait for the planes to come past; you will end up with a blur.

As you pan don't move your feet, just pivot your body.

Good luck and don't be afraid to ask.

Very cool! Fly over our house daily- we're only about 15 minutes from Langley AFB. THey got a new set of jets about a month ago of something like that. I think last weekend they were testing them lol. Pretty amazing!

Thumb's too small. You'll need to expand it to see the Blue Angels buzzing Oprah's apartment in Chicago.
