Like the subject line says...Shoot in available light. Advanced edit.

I like it, although I think maybe you are going for "low light". Available light could be a free study in landscape. Low light, though, will be fraught with DNMC discussion...

Maybe "natural light" with an emphasis in the discription about using shadow...

Use natural lighting to explore the effects of light and shadow on your subject. Use light (or lack of light) to create added impact.

Or something like that. Lots of people use window light for their photos anyway, the point of this would be to explore what the lack of light does to a photo.

(This is something I'm personally working on this year... my PAD blog, for example, is titled "A Study of Shadows.")

"Available light" is one of those photographer's code phrases that would be open to radically divergent interpretation by the "uninitiated"; it would need to be accompanied by a challenge description that defined it, such as "Available Light": Photographers are said to be working with "available light" when they shoot in low-light situations without supplemental lighting added. It does not refer solely to "natural light"; for example, shooting a band performing onstage would be available-light photography as long as you didn't use a flash. I presume this is what the OP are referring to; "low-light-without-photographer-added-lighting". Typically, "available light" photography entails high ISO and a struggle against blur and subject movement.

When I was shooting architecture for a living, one of our selling points was that we did our interior photography by available light, as opposed to the more normal importation of strobes to fill the space with light: the following shot was a 30-minute, available light exposure ΓΆ€”

So it's NOT the same thing as "natural light", which is photographer's code for "lit without artificial light".

R.

I clicked on this thread hoping for some available light. I'm in desperate need for some. :D

hehehe, yep, I think it would call for a definition. Some folks might see 'Available Light' challenge and think, "Cool, I just bought this fancy lighting kit, so I guess it's available to me!"
:-P
