I purchased a circular polarizer filter this weekend and when I started taking pictures this problem showed up in the corners when i would adjust the filter. Can someone explain to me why?

That's called vignetting. Was the polarizer the only filter? What lens were you using? This will appear with wide angle lenses.

To try and avoid vignetting, a slim filter should be used. Slim filters don't protrude much from the end of the lens and are less likely to cause vignetting.

It's the filter itself. The rim is thicker than a regular UV filter. I get the same with my polarizer when I crank it back to 12mm on my 12-24mm. I just shoot at 14mm and over when I'm using the polarizer.

Click on the button at the far right above the post box and just enter the image id (which is at the end of the URL for the pic).

Avoid stacking for two reasons:

1) to avoid vignetting on wide angle lenses
2) filters aren't necessarily the same quality glass as the lens so stacking could degrade the quality of the image

Thanks. I really noticed a poorer quality photo this time around when I had the two filters connected.

btw, i'm reposting the picture just to check out your instructions

I would also suggest not stacking your polarizer with any other filter. It degrades quality. You could also zoom just a little bit so that the filter does not show in the corners.

Another thing I want to point out is that the photograph is very nice, but the composition is not good. You have divided the photograph into two equal halves. You should have shown more foreground or more sky. Keeping the couple on the left side with more sky showing would have made this a superb image.

ignite, you're right. i'm still making totally amateur mistakes. I just started shooting that couple this evening as they walked down the sidewalk. i do need to pay attention to those types of things you mentioned.

i have to say i am so happy with this site. i got such quick responses to this question. Thank you all for your help. well worth my $25!!!

UV filter + polarizer will cause vignetting.

polarizer alone should not give any vignetting, except with very wide angle, but it does exist special polarizer for ultra wide angles lenses.
