I'm thinking since I live in the UK my nearest B&H is New york? can anybody tell me the nearest airport to B&H and the distance? (don't ask)

There are 3 airports close to New York City

JFK
EWR
LGA

LGA is considerably small so I don't think you will find a flight directly to LGA. JFK is convenient. You can take the AirTrain to Howard Beach or Jamaica stations and both have the subway that will get you in the proximity of B&H.

Although, shipping will probably be cheaper than flying here :)

Directions from JFK
Directions from Laguardia
Directions from Newark Liberty International Airport

I would say newark is the closest but it's across the river and it's more convenent to go to jfk because they have a train to nyc that will take right to penn station and then the walk is only 3 or 4 blocks

Newark IS the closest. They have buses and the PATH train that runs to the city. Bus goes to 42nd street, train to Penn Station (34th street).
LaGuardia has buses that run into the city as well.
JFK dos have a train, but that would be the A line. Runs through some pretty bad areas.

Depending on what time of day your flying in, makes a difference. NEVER EVER fly into ANY of the 3 airports on a weekday in the morning. Night times are fine though.

Honestly...depending on traffic or the time of day they are all almost equidistant. In perfect conditions for each route there might be a 10-15-20 minute distance difference between the lot.

They each have a bus that runs into 42nd streets Port Authority and it's maybe an 6-8 minute walk to B&H (34th and 9th), from there.

Newark probably has the edge...

Thanks for the info all :) it looks like LA GUARDIA is the closest in miles, MrEd, can I ask why?

Damn it, Dan! How dare you torment me by telling me how close they are to Penn Station? Now the next time I take the train to NYC, I'LL HAVE TO GO TO B&H!

I would go by which one you can get a flight into and price to be honest...

Pawdrix was right also. Mileagewise, they're all about the same.

If you meant why not fly in on a weekday morning....Well, I guess you've never seen NYC rush hour.

Getting through midtown traffic could be a crawl at the wrong time of day so miles might mean nothing. 34th and 9th is West and New Jersey enters Manhattan from the West side while the other Airports go through the thick of things.

If I'm right JFK has a shuttle-tram link to the Long Island Railroad which drops you off at 34th and 8th Penn Station one block away...that might be your quickest bet...and cheapest.

You're better off buying online. The store is insane. If you need to see something before you buy it, go to a local store and check it out and then order online. You aren't seriously going to fly from UK to NYC just to go to B&H are you??

laguardia is not an international airport , so if your coming from england you must go to jfk or newark they are international

You can take NJTransit in addition to PATH from EWR. Taking NJTransit, you'll go straight to Penn station (should cost between $12-$16 round trip, I don't know from that stop) and then get out at the 34th St & 8th Ave exit and head west a block to 9th Ave. The entrance to BH should be across the street and around the corner.

Adorama is also within walking distance (17th or 18th St?) but most of their new stock is in a warehouse and you can't purchase it and leave same-day.

Seriously though, it doesn't make sense to make a special trip there from the UK, but if you're in the area for other reasons, it's definitely someplace to visit. Another thing to keep in mind--for both stores--is the hours, to make sure they're open. Check their web sites and probably call if you can. They are both run by very strict Orthodox Jews, so don't try going on an Jewish holiday, and they both close early (I think 1300 for BH and 1400 for Adorama) on Fridays (and all day Saturday, I believe).

added: Note that there are two Penn Stations on the same line, one in New York, and one in Newark (which is *not* the airport stop). You obviously want the one in New York.

LOL, would make a heck of a story though.

Hey kids, I'm flying to NYC to buy a camera.
Dad, that's nuts.
Not really, I'm gonna get a tripod and bag too.
Oh well, if that's the case. Have a nice trip.

I'm sure there's another reason he asked which airport is closest. However, he did ask not to ask, so I won't.

It's easy :-) Last couple of business trips I caught the train to Penn station instead of flying and just made sure I allowed a couple of extra hours before my meetings - for er um um "to allow for any potential delays " - like me forgeting the time once I get in that shop :-) Never seen so many people queue to part with so much money..... :0)

It can make perfect economic sense since the price differential between Europe and the US is huge, not to mention the duties and taxes you'd have to pay at customs when the shipment arrives. If it's a big enough order you might still be ahead by finding a cheap flight to NYC and getting everything you need there and going home with it. Don't forget that you'll have to pay NY state sales tax when you buy stuff in the store...I think it's around 8%.

Hmmm, maybe...but he'd need to save at least $300 or so. That's the cheapest RT flight I've seen. So maybe if he's buying a 5D (or two), an arsenal of L IS lenses, and a carbon fiber tripod he could do it. ;-) hehe

Thanks for all the thoughts/comments/directions peeps :)

Playing with my abacus (and being totaly honest) the duty payable (6.5% + 17.5%) = £554. I've found flights for £300 + airport tax and that coupled with getting to the airports then to B&H and back, overnight stay etc would come close to £500.

So, by sitting at home I'd save about £400 and by having a wild weekend travelling across the ocean and back I'd save an extra £50.

I just hope my annual bonus is good this year!

*Sigh* I want a lens that comes with its own hard case... :)
