I am debating getting a nano or a photo, which one?
I don't think i will ever use the ipod photo for pictures, as it can't display raw images and is so slow at downloading.
So it will be a music player. the 20gb is obviously attractive, but i don't think i will ever have over 1000 songs that i want to listen to at one time, so why would i want 5000 on the device?.. The photo is heavier, which gives points to the nano.
any other thoughts??? they are basically the same price.

or of course there is the mini as well. I have read it has longer battery life. But perhaps the nano features still make the nano better.
other opinions?

the nano can display pictures as well (obviously on a smaller screen though). the nano's size makes it very easy to carry around (apparently designed to fit into the 'coin pocket' found on most jeans), if you dont need the song capacity- the nano is an excellent choice . plus its flash so i presume the battery life is pretty good :)

Forget Ipod. Get the IRiver. Sounds way better. 5GB should be enough.
For real fun, get the Bluetake Bluetooth 450X headphones and an audio jack dongle with BT 1.2. Then you are a-rocking without wires, even with the device in the backpack.
Whee!
You need a good playlist though as this method doesn't allow skipping tracks, only internal volume control on the earphone. |

I have all three.....Actually have a 4th gen photo that I bought a compact flash reader from belkin that works great. It was faster than I thought to transfer photos. The 30gb 4th is bulkier than the newest 5th gen. I have used a newer big one and like the size of the screen. As I am never that far away from a charger for long periods....the battery life has not been an issue.
I bought my kids each a mini last summer for their bdays...they work great and I like the size for taking music along. I used my daughters when we went to mexico more than I used mine. I like the size.
I bought my wife a 4gb nano at christmas....and absolutely love the size.
The thing about the nano is the thinness makes it succeptable to bending and breaking. You can sit on the other 2 and not break it...The nano might break. If I were just wanting music...I would choose the nano. If you wanted more photo and video...I would choose the big one. You will have a hard time finding a new mini unless someone has a huge stockpile of them. It would be a great choice if you could get it at a reduced price. Also any of the cases from DLO are great additions.
Hope this helps.
As far as battery life. The only time any of us has run out of battery, was when we accidentally left it running or did not use the hold buttom.

but if it can't display raw images, the ipod photo isn't much of a viewer... just a really slow downloader, then I may as well get a wolverine or something that is more bang for my buck (for a photo storage device) and stick with the nano for the player

I have the Nano, and it's the first iPod I'm willing to get, as the size is a major issue, I have the Archos AV480 with 80GB disk, and it's an MP3 player, but to carry it around to listen to music.. no way ! it's way to big and heavy..
but the nano is great, small, lightweight, and just a beautiful design, but it doesn't sound that great.. neither does the other iPods.... but that's the problem with MP3's, no soundqualty ;)

| The iPod can view the embedded JPEG in RAW files, or you can shoot JPEG + RAW. Remember that it also handles contact info and calendars, and serves as a portable storage device, so it's more than just music. |

I had the 20gb iPod photo and loved it, never had any problems. Then I recently sold it here cause I got the new 30gb iPod video and I just love that thing. Picture quality and both the ipod photo and the ipod video are great. Of course if you watch videos the battery is not going to last as long also its the same if you are doing a slide show of your pictures. But playing music it last about the same as my 20gb ipod did. Also it sounds great. Also using it as a hard drive its great, I backup all my pictures to it so I always have them with me. Using as a hardrive it to bring work home is great too. Finally the videos look just great on it.

I have the 2gb nano, it's very nice for music. Small enough to just throw in your pocket with some earphones, and then if you have time, just pull it out and listen for a while.
I can't think of a practical use for it for pictures, but it is a nice feature I guess..

I have a 60GB video Ipod, and a 4GB Nano. I really wanted something small for the gym, however I have about 25GB of music and I like gadgets like the video function.
I could actually use the Video Ipod for running, however I run for an hour or more and the size of the nano is better for that.
You might consider a 30GB video ipod. I store a lot of my kids photos on it and I bought a AV cable so I can plug it in a TV and do slide shows. I bought a software on the web which coverts pretty much any video formats to be compatible with the ipod. I can also use the AV cable to watch videos on the TV. You can have a good quality DVD movie for under a GB, a lot smaller if you only want to watch it on the ipod. Like I said, I like gadgets.
If I had to choose one it would be the video ipod. The screen is nice and bright.
