It has been raining here all day and also very foggy. I thought I would go to Jiminy Peak and try to get a shot for free study...something like skiers emerging from the fog or a chair lift ascending into the fog. Well, no luck.
On my way out I walked past an ambulance with a kid in it. He had sprained his ankle. A little further down that particular parking lot is a gate that is supposed to open automatically. At the gate is this big red SUV with a guy at least 275lbs. and about 4 to 5 inches taller than me (I weigh 165/5' 11"). As I am going by he asks if I know how to open the gate. I respond that I don't. When I walk past his car I see one of those things that operates it. I look at it to see if maybe there is a button or something. He walks over. I said there doesn't appear to be a button but it looks like it takes a key and start to walk away. He calls back after two or three steps with "Thanks for nothing a**hole." I turn around and say very calmly "The ambulance is only 20 feet away behind that bush there perhaps someone there can open it for you."
He immediatley starts walking towards me "You want to discuss this further punk?" "No, not really" I respond and keep walking. Now he is like 20 feet this side of the gate still yelling at me "I got to get in there to load up my kids stuff f**k face - get back here." Again I reply calmly "I don't work here, I just came to take pictures."
He is still walking towards me, my camera bag is over my shoulder. He is threatening to knock the crap out of me cause I won't let him in. I turn around and he has his fist clenched and is just starting to raise it up when he slips on a small patch of ice. "Oh my back. Help me up. My back, my back." I walk over to him and very politely say "The ambulance is 40 feet over that way. I am sure if you yell and threaten someone, they will be glad to help you. I already tried and you were ready to punch me in the face." I turned and walked away and he did exactly that to the next person who walked by (fading as I am walking away)"Listen a**hole, help me up."
Why are people like this? I couldn't have helped him up if I wanted to just like I couldn't open the gate for him. And then what, even if I do help him up, he was ready to punch me (for no reason). Would I have had that to look forward to as his gratitude?
I think I would rather have someone approach me to tell me I can't take pictures.

I hope you mean that in the sense that this guy is their father. The kid wasn't hurt that bad. He just couldn't ski anymore today. I was walking in when they were putting him in the ambulance. He was hopping on one foot. The ambulance was still there (obviously) when I left 20 minutes or so later so he definitely wasn't hurt badly. |

Ya, he probably shouldn't be anybody's father.

It's amazing to me ... some people I guess I'll never understand.
I wonder how often saying "hey, you, a**hole that I've never met before in my life, help me with this or I'll act in a threatening manner" works for him. |

I'd like to hope that was Karma in action. :)

Karma? I don't know, but it was poetic though. |

It's good that you didn't help him up. He might have accused you of hurting him, and had you arrested or sued. I do feel sorry for people who choose to live such miserable, hostile lives. |

I feel even more sorry for the people who have to interact with them on a regular basis.

Some people are just A-holes no 2 ways about it, especially the ones that think they can get people do to what they want through intemidation. Luckly they are usually not to bright. A few weeks back I was at the gas station filling up (1 am on a friday) , a guy 2 lanes over tryes to drive off with the gas nozzle still in his newer MB. Luckly the pump had shut off and it broke at the nozzle part. So I finished filling up and went to pay inside for my gas. Well here is this guy (about 250+ 6'4) bitching out the cashier for the pump nozzle scratching his car. I stood there for about 5 seconds till the guy called the cashier girl (she was maybe 20 years old) a stupid... You get the idea, she was almost to tears. I told the guy to knock it off, and it wasn't her fault for you pulling away with the nozzle still in your car. The guy told me to shut the f*ck up and mind my own business. I told the guy it is now my business, no one needs to be treated like that. He tells me if I don't shut up now he will "punch my skull in." First off I could smell alcohol on his breath, so chances are I have some advantage:) So I told the guy take the first swing, heck we got a camera there, and there, oh also there, in fact hit me right here on the chin, I'd love to have a nice solid lawsuit against you all documented. Then I turn to the cashier and say I think you should call the cops this guys probibly over the .8 limit. The guy storms outta there and jumps in his car and takes off. The cashier did call the cops with his liscense number.. I do hope they caught him, but what a a-hole intimidating a young lady like that!

Wow, what a jerk (both Alienyst's guy and MQuinn's). I guess someone has to represent the lowest form of human life, just sucks for people around them.

Big dumb f*cks are exactly that: big dumb f*cks. You showed more self-restraint than I ever could. The worse thing is that he's going to raise at least a couple of more morons, just like him. |

You know, I think we should come up with a new pejorative. The distal opening to the digestive tract is quite necessary and performs a most useful function -- I think the current comparison is markedly unfair to the unmentionable anatomic feature. |

I thought about that but I would have had to take the bag off (backpack style bag) and taken out the camera. I wanted no trouble and certainly wanted no chance of damage due to an idiot to the camera or contents of bag. I think I did the right thing in walking away. |

In high school, my friends and I used to use "amoeba" as a perjorative, often accompanied by "mumbling"; in other words, instead of "You f****ing a**hole!" We'd say "You mumbling amoeba!" I think this falls under the heading of geek humor, but I'm not sure :-)
