hehe :D
Yeah...always zipper your backpack up before you leave it...because if you don't, and you go to pick it up quickly, the contents will fall to the hard ground below and break.
Luckily, I had my d70 in my hands, with my 80-200 mounted to it. My 85 was tightly packed into its surroundings, as was my 50 and sb600. All my other stuff either covered or in a little container that sits in there firmly with a lid.
My innocent 18-70 was currently taking a nap where the 80-200 normally resides...and thus was sitting loosely.
I didn't think anything was wrong with it to be honest, although it fell a good distance onto hard concrete. Nothing rattled or anything. Sure enough though, when focusing, it would almost feel as though it was hitting a road block or something, then in the viewfinder, it would jump to either side and lunge forward...something came loose.
--
Anyway, Ritz Camera gets an A+ so far...the lens is currently being shipped and covered under their warranty, and I have a nice little loaner to keep me happy.
--
Moral of the story: zip your backpack before you leave it !!!
EDIT: or just get a Ritz extended warranty!!!

Thanks. I don't even use that lens too often, but figured what the heck.
I'm going to start being more careful with my gear. Stupid errors can cost a lot of money.

Sure can DP... I seem to recall that Scalvert dropped an L lens recently.... bet that cost him large. I currently only have one fancy schmancy lens, but if I ever get better at this photography thing, I might just fork over the bucks to get a few more.
Hope everything turns out okay for you.......and YES I will be more careful with my equipment. |

I had my Canon 70-200 2.8 IS lens in my backpack and was jumping down off of a big rock (about 4 feet high) when I heard a "thud" behind me. I turned around in shock and horror as I realized that the "thud" was my 70-200. Aparently my backpack and unzipped sufficiently to let it tumble out.
No glass was broken and it still focused fine, but the zoom ring simply turned without zooming. Perhaps I should have considered it an upgrade - suddenly, without zoom, I had an f/2.8 200mm "prime" lens! :-)
Luckily I had purchased an extended warrantee with that lens and it was fixed for free. |

I dropped one off my camera last winter. I thought it had screwed on in place, but evidently I did not have it lined up right. As I took my hand away, the lens fell off, onto the snow covered deck. Luckily there is a guy in town that fixes lenses and he rfepaired it for just $25.00. Ever since then, I am real careful to ensure the lens is locked in place before taking my hand away.
Glad to hear yours is getting repaired and that you got a loaner.

I once dropped a K-1000 with a 17mm lens through the thin ice of a frozen rock bottom spring. my fingers were numb so that is the excuse I had. The camera and lens were fine. I took them home and put them in the oven and had many years more use out of them. The film inside was not even damaged.
I had once agreed to do a friend a favor and take a slightly intoxicated girl home to her house. On the bench seat of my pickup in between us was my camera bag with a K-1000, a Nikon N90 and four lenses. At some point during the ride to her house she decided she wanted to sit closer to me so she threw my camera bag out the window. I stopped the truck, threw the girl out and went back to get my camera bag. Miraculously nothing in the bag was the least bit injured.

Wow. I must say I am personally glad that nothing in the camera bag was damaged, because if it were, reading this anecdote would have caused me true pain.
Were I in your situation, and had I the strength, I would have thrown the girl straight through the window that she just dumped the camera out of.

Actually I asked her to get out. Then I reached over her, opened the door and pushed her out with my foot. She was a really fine looking 22 year old girl too, so it seemed a real shame that she messed with my cameras.

When I was on a class trip in Disney world, a couple of my friends decided to kidnap me away from another group of friends I was with, and I found myself being carried high over the heads of three guys. My pockets were loose. My Olympus fell about six feet, hit the pavement and bounced and rolled several times. The case is kind if cracked/dented/gouged, the battery cover tends to fly open at random times, but otherwise it's still perfectly fine :DD

haha yeah with that 17-55 2.8, I'd try and sell the 18-70 as well. If I didn't have a warranty, I'd be getting the 17-55 instead of a different lens and a tripod here shortly.

Dave - my rebel has that scar on the top from a very similar lapse of attention. I am now anal about zipping my bag closed. Fortunately the battle wound is all cosmetic. Will make it hard to sell it if i ever get to that point though.
A loaner lens? That's cool.

Now you tell me! I dropped my D-70 with the Tamrom 200-500 attached to a monopod yesterday. Was taking some shots out the window and got stupid, leaned it against a counter and turned away for a minute and the whole thing fell over and crashed on the floor. I heard the thud and my heart dropped.
Good news is all seems well with both camera and lens. Shot ten or so frames to make sure and they all look ok, focus works and no obvious signs of injury.

I have to say, it's the first time I've ever heard of an extended warranty covering droppage.
The ones we can buy here don't cover against human error or damage of *ANY* kind.. so they're basically pointless. |

Mine canon 70-300 dropped from the overhead compartment on a flight to Greece. The front edge was dented so I can't remove the polarising filter but other than that it works fine.
How can you get a lens replaced when you are technically at fault for 'allowing' it to get damaged? |

Yeah...that's what I wondered. When I bought the body/lens combo, I thought the salesman was selling me a load of bull. As it turns out, he wasn't joking around. It's already paid for itself...
I asked her if they'd replace it or try to repair it. She said she didn't know, but they actually send them all to Nikon, then Nikon decides and sends them the bill. I asked her what if I took the lens really quick and ran it over with my truck (just out of curiosity) -- she said, then they'd replace it for sure.
--
The salesman didn't even mention the loaner program to me at the time of purchase, but that will be really handy if something ever happens to the body...and get this...the warranty lasts FIVE YEARS. If say 4 years from now I completely annihilate my d70, they will replace it with whatever is most 'similar or better' than it.
