Anyone for a Nikon vs. Canon discussion?

Compare a Mac to an Alienware machine. About the same price and performance.

G5 quad vs Alienware desktop

Yea but you can't get a G5 in either of these:

Sorry, I had to...

So do we have any estimate when the Intel powered 17" notebook will be released?

I'm sorry if I've come across seeming as I am bashing Apple. I'm not. In fact, I am very desireful of being able to purchase an Apple laptop for dual use.

I spoke with Apple's sales department earlier today and they're expecting them to ship 'before Valentines day'.

Congrats on a virus free enviorment (for now that is) the iMac G5 I have myself 20" version with 1.5GB RAM its very capable machine, stick with PSCS2 because my friend got Aperture and was so dissappointed with it that he gave it to me for free, I installed it and have to say... its very slow indeed, has a few good points but not worth the $500 tag. MAC have now switched to Intel and I feel this will make them more accessable to more users and thus increasing the chances of people making viruses for mac users as the percentile increases. I love my MAC and my MAC lappy ..

WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD.

The list price for Apple's 17" Powerbook is $2499, which includes a stunning widescreen display, 120Gb 5400rpm HD, DVD-RW, 128mb video with DVI output, digital optical audio, gigabit ethernet, airport and bluetooth, a backlit keyboard, scrolling trackpad and Firewire 800 in a form that's thinner and lighter than most comparable PC laptops. Most of those features are either optional or unavailable on the Toshiba.

i'd hardly call it a stunning widescreen display and its 15.4" not 17" and 1440x900 isn't what i call a decent res.. i have 1440x1050 on my 2 year old 14" Laptop..

its a 100GigaByte HDD not 120Gigabit..

fyi the centrino 1.8Ghz is about the same speed in 2D apps as an AMD64 3700+ (3700+ being a mid range AMD chip..)

and where did u get Firewire 800 from?

It's simply nice to have the option...

You can quite easily just drag the relevant file onto a dock icon, such as Zippist (or any other compression program) or onto the Mail icon. In the latter case, a new email is started with the document already attached. I prefer this way of doing it to using a menu, but then I'm a (fairly) long-time Mac user.

What are you reading Bobster? We were comparing Apple's 17" Powerbook, not the just-announced MacBooks. The resolution on that model's screen is 1680 x 1050, it comes with a 120GB HD and FireWire 800. The specs are HERE.

Exactly, but not everyone is a desktop publisher. Yes, FileMakerPro will allow for a relational database. However, there is something called the "business world". And for that, Access is quite common.

It's not that you can't do the task on a Mac. But the fact of the matter is often, it is a Microsoft based tool that everyone is using. So yes, you can choose to be incompatible in-house. But if you have need to be interactive in the business world, you can't make such choices.

I feel your pain on that one, I use a PowerBook at work and I do occasionally have to ask people to convert their Access databases for me. But I just found this. Haven't tried it yet, and I realize it's not a complete solution. But then again I have no interest in creating Access databases, only in reading them.

As for the rest of MS Office, Word is quite clearly superior on the Mac, more stable and offers better backward compatibility with old documents (regardless of what platform they came from). I've been using Word since version 1.0, and every version with the exception of 6.0 has been better on the Mac (that was the one version where they tried uniting the code-bases). Excel seems to be pretty decent product on both platforms (after a very delayed start on Windows). PowerPoint is garbage on both platforms. Entourage doesn't even exist on Windows. Outlook on Windows is the closest counterpart, but it's a total beast in comparison, with the worst user-interface design of any MS product.

I dont have any problems with my PC. You guys refer to haveing troubles and maybe you have but no troubles here. If you can't do a basic upgrade to a PC you should absolutly go a differant system. And stay away from those nasty 12 piece jig saw puzzles. ;)

I'm a tinkerer, but it took me until the late 90's to move from Mac to PC. The opportunity to get into the hidden places to fix or improve was the biggest seller, and MS Windows was a nice balance between function (*Nix) and form (Mac).

OSX looks too shiny for me (then again, so does Windows Vista), but being based on BeOS theoretically would allow a whole lot of the poking around that I'm used to. Maybe I'll give it a go sometime - it has been a while.

OS X isn't based on BeOS. It's based on BSD.

It is not based on BeOS - it is based on UNIX - BSD I believe.

Please save me the effort of looking this up, but, what's the difference between Leopard and Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger? Is Leopard the next one after the tiger thing?

VMware will emulate the os and you can run OSX native if you are familiar with MBS and how to write to it. Been running OSX native for a while now as a joke for my Mac friends. Hardware is hardware you buy cheap you have problems you buy quality you don't have as many problems. There is nothing that never breaks or fails to perform. If it was so then no one would ever need to have a warranty. You will find its all in the programming now.

It's based on BSD.

You can also load X11 and run an X-windows/Unixenvironment on your Mac if that's something that tickles your fancy. You can switch back and forth between OSX and X-windows at will.

Now, if you couple that with the new intel Mac's capabiltiy to run Win XP, you can have OSX, WinXP and a Unix machines in one box, even switching between them with a few keystrokes (no reboot).

Also, if you want a free Office suite, check out Neo-Office, it's based on Open Office, but runs in OSX. You do need to install X11, but you don't have to work in it to make Neo-Office run.

Dang right the experience won't be the same. The Chevy user will have a much better experience by and large. Why? Because while you'll have to stick with the same car for twice as long and deal with it's inevitable problems, the Chevy user will have upgraded to the latest taking advantage of the latest technical innovations.

In the world of computers, this is doubly so, because technology improves so rapidly in the computer field.

Like fancier cars, Macs tend to include cutting edge hardware and software technologies that aren't yet available on PCs. What you call the latest technical innovations have often been around a while in Mac-world. Perhaps more importantly, Macs tend to have a longer USEFUL life. I've got Macs from the 90's that run the current version of OS X just fine. Try running Windows Vista on a pre-2000 PC. The upshot is that while you COULD upgrade to the latest and greatest, you don't necessarily have to.
