When I entered my photo for the challenge I saw the numbers of entries and I was shocked. So many photos!
Right now there are 562 entries (and counting) and I thought about the voting process.
There are 2 weeks to cast your votes, but I think it's almost impossible to judge all entries, even to comment on them!
How are you gonna handle this? Tips? |

Anyone up for commenting on all of them?
I'll try it if someone else does too...

If there are 600 entries and you spend a full minute on each one (that's quite a lot) it would take 10 hours to vote them all. That's about 26 minutes a day for 14 days, which doesn't seem un-doable to me.
The way I (and many others vote) is by making a quick runthrough to "sort" the images into categories based on initial response. Since this is a free study challenge, you don't need to worry about whether the image meets the challenge or not, and you can make your first, subjective runthrough very quickly indeed.
Then I go back as time permits and revisit the group that impressed me the most and vote them more carefully. By now I've seen all the images and I have a good idea how I feel about the challenge as a whole. My initial sort left the "subjective best" images in the 6-slot. I go through all those again, still relatively quickly, and bump the "best of the best" up to a 7.
Finally, I go back and visit that smaller group of 7's and start studying them more craefully to find my 8's, 9's, and 10's. When I've accomplished that, I can go back to the lower groups as time permits and adjust their scores as I see fit.
The advantage of this approach is it allows me to vote seriously on every image I think is potentially ribbon-worthy. Nobody gets "penalized" if I don't have time to "seriously" rate 100% of the images, because the ones I don't get back to are in the 5-slot. And they didn't impress me enough to get a 6 the first time I saw them...

With Rob on that ... do a quick first run ... take the first impressions ... then go back and re-score and closer inspection ... I always run through multiple times .. but 500+ means probably twice.

@ caleb: no, sorry, I don't think I'm gonna do that. It won't be hard to comment on the photos I like, but I think the photos I don't really like much will be harder to me (language problem I seem to have ;)). Those comments will be very short and probably not very helpful...
@ R.: if you say it like that, 26 minutes a day isn't that much. I'm gonna try real hard. Thanx for your explanation! |

To expand a bit on what I was saying re: first runthrough voting, if I spend 6 seconds on each image, that's 10 per minute and one hour to sort all 600 images. You can easily decide if an image is worth coming back to (by your standards) in 6 seconds. Of course, that's assuming you have a broadband connection; those on dialup will have a much harder time of it.
It's been a long time since I've used dialup, and never on DPC, but I suspect that for those with slow connections the most time-effective approach is indeed to vote each image only once. For those of us un broadband, I have determined to my own satisfaction that my time-spent-voting decreases dramatically if I do a sorting run first.

All I know is I am really going to enjoy all the amazing photos this challenge is sure to bring out. I am with bear_music in that I will probably do a "dry run" and try to group everything out first and then go back and revisit, rethink, up/down my votes. I will comment on as many as I can (most of the time I do my voting from work between phone calls).

I disagree. I think people will be anxious to view what the entrants deem to be their best of the year. With two weeks to vote this can easily be done in bits and pieces. Commenting may be a different story. But I expect (hope) to see a high number of votes per entry. |

How about the CC members who will have to critique them. In a regular challenge it is an individual photo with a theme. In the Best of though you already know that the photog deems this their best. How do you critique that without upsetting at least a few? |

I'm sorry, maybe I didn't use the right words. I meant to say it would be very hard to get every vote in the right place, not to vote on all photos. But to be honest, I thougt it would take lots of time to vote. But the way R. said it, I think it's gonna be ok.
I'm really looking forward to see all the beauty in this challenge! |

I can't seem to be able to find the poll results page, but as I recall when I looked at the results of the recent poll on connect speed, dial up was an extreme minority in the community. |

I didn't check the box, to try to make it a little tiny bit easier for them (haha! 1 out of 564, but it's with a good intention ;)) |

sam trundle and i commented on all of them in last years 'best of', and i may or may not try it again this year. it really takes a helluvan effort, especially when trying to leave decent comments and not just one-or-two worders. |

With well over 600 images, a comment on each is a daunting task. However, you need vote on only 20% of the images for your votes to be included in the tally. This may seem like an unfair practice at first glance, but consider that the display order of the images is random for each voting session, so the result should be representative of the votes cast by the general DPC population.
I like Bear's approach (as do many other voters) and that technique works well for me. A glance at an image, a few seconds, is sufficient to determine if the image has any appeal for you. Finer points of technical presentation can be decided after the initial sorting. Critique of low scoring images is probably more important than kudos to the better images. |
