My whole family is as redneck as they come (when your dad walks your sister to school cuz they're in the same grade, when you mow your grass and find a car, etc) so I feel qualified to say whatever I want on this topic (sorta like black guys all callin each other words white people must not).

If you drive a pick-em-up truck, and 'yehl at summin fer takin yer pichur' then yes, you are a redneck!

I am old enough to have heard the term redneck before Jeff Foxworthy and remember that it WAS derogatory, but in 2005?

My thought:
If you act like an ass, you're probly an ass.
If you act like a great guy, you're probly a great guy.
And if you act like a redneck...

Just maybe....

Yeah.

I'm gonna hafta say. I'm from South Karryliner and damn proud to be a rednek. If ya'll gots a problem with that, I'll just tie ye up to my 4WD pick-em-up truck and drive ye through the swamps till ye change yer mind!!!

Edit to add: And in case ya'll is wonderin' I'm quite well edumukated! I went to skool fer 16 years. When I finally got out of 3rd grade, I decided to quit!

Oh, and Northern girls seem to love a Southern gentleman accent! ;-)

I have a redneck friend. He ain't Southern, he's a Canuck and off hunting moose today. One of my neighbours is a redneck. Not only does he drink beer regularly, but he drinks it out of cans and burbs frequently. He likes to show off dubious skills like crushing a can with his bare hands and wearing his jeans without a belt without loosing them. He owns a pickup mainly for picking up women, I think. We get on dandy, since, despite all this, he's a good guy who wouldn't harm a fly and means well.

I, myself, am decidedly not a redneck. I'm a good guy too, although I've been called a blockhead Nazi, an idiot, an arrogant snob, a condescending bastard and many other names. Half the time, the names even fit. The other half, to me, kinda opens a window to the soul of those who use a familiar name or word in a language everyone speaks and understands. It is, to me, an unsophisticated, unfiltered honesty without which I would not not be able to tell friend from foe or boy from girl.

Political correctness, to me, is a method devised to desensitize perfectly complex human beans by replacing them with obedient, unthinking and unfeeling pawns. I'd rather sleep with a redneck.

I live in freakin' Kansas...and I must say, that I do not enjoy rednecks. There really aren't that many around here, not as many as outsiders think.

I just don't like the whole cowboy/redneck/farmer/country thing....it's not me.

That being said....I enjoyed reading this thread.

So would not 'redneck' be the perfect word to use if you mean to describe those who are less intelligent, siting around on the porch drinking beer, with a yard full of broken down cars parked in front of the run down home/trailer, and spitting chewing tobacco... if that's what it conjures up?

Just to play the devil's advocate here for a moment, wouldn't a mewling sensitivity to the use of the word 'redneck' describe exactly the sort of liberal-minded, whiny, effete attributes that most 'rednecks' pride themselves about not having, and in fact have been known to assult others for posessing? When confronted with the word, I'd imagine most 'rednecks' would say "Yeah? So what you MFer, comere and say that so I kin kick your ass!" or "Woo hah! Here, have a [sic] MGD!" Those that would take offense at the term are almost by definition not 'rednecks', and this feels like a manufactured issue imposed from outside by non-rednecks who draw weak parallels to racism, when being a 'redneck' is much more an issue of culture and class. For example, the difference between 'nigger' and 'gangbanger'. The former is undoubtedly used by less enlightened people to assign the stereotypical attributes of being poor, uneducated, violent, and unworthy to an entire race of people, the latter is used to apply the same attributes to individuals in a raceless context. There are black gangbangers, white, asian, and hispanic... it's not a racial epithet. It describes individuated characteristics (and kids).

There are Northern rednecks, Southern rednecks, hispanic rednecks, and I'm pretty sure you'll find rednecks in most places around the world, even if their necks are not actually sunburned. I bet there's no confusion as to just the type of person I'd be describing if I said 'Japanese redneck'. The phrase may sound odd, you still undoubtedly get the idea.

And frankly, the Northern, colonial rednecks I knew as a kid would kick the ass of any Southern redneck as soon as spit chaw on them.

So stop looking for even more things to take offense about, lest we slide down the slippery slope of rule by those who whine the loudest. What's next? Hick? Hillbilly? Country bumpkin? Where do we stop?

The man who accosted our dear photographer in the original post was being contemptable, and we need words to express this. I personally feel that 'redneck' suited the purpose just fine.

I'm no cowboy, or farmer. I don't hunt, but I do fish (on occasion). I own a gun that I keep loaded and under my pillow at night (our house was broken in to twice before we moved). I don't shoot often, but I know how to handle a gun. I do own a 4wd pick-up truck and plan to buy a boat soon, mostly for water skiing, but also for fishing. My wife and I make 6 figures and live a very comfortable life on a golf course. I work in the medical field and know a lot about computers. I enjoy photography and web design. I also own many power tools and know how to use them. I can design a website or remodel a house (including the wiring). I belong to a supper club where we have wine and cheese. I also drink beer and have been known to chew tobacco and smoke. I appreciate fine art and enjoy nekkid women. I go to broadway productions, enjoy opera, and frequent our local plays and symphony. I watch Monday night football and go to our local hockey games. I am a redneck and damn proud of it.

I was raised by simple parents and come from a very humble background. We are from rural South Carolina and I grew up on cotton fields. Not only do I know what a crop duster is, I've seen them in action up close and personal. I went to college, married well, and despite all I have now, I have never forgotten my background. My values, faith, and traditions are what make me who I am.

For everyone who has negative stereotypes, do not be so quick to judge. We rednecks come in all shapes and sizes. We have a wide variety of interests and education levels. You never know, the guy who's photograph you are admiring at a gallery may have been drinking a Pabst Blue Ribbon when he took it.

Holy crap! The term Redneck represents a protected class? Give me a break!

Last time I checked blacks, Jews, Mexicans, "spics" "wops" and the like are a distinct racial, religious or national group. Not really a choice. Not so with redneck as there are about a zillion definitions as to what a redneck really is.

I find this tread a bit insulting to the real issues of being socially tolerant of race, religion and nationality. And as was previously stated rednecks (at least by general definition as to whom they are) are repulsed by this type of political correctness.
