I recently had a request to do some Emo photos for a young lady. My question is what the heck is Emo?

Some of the stereotypical fashion trends associated with emo include the wearing of tight jeans, black clothing, All-Stars shoes, used T-shirts with random prints, and dyeing their hair in unatural dark hues. Dark make-up is also popular with females, but males may sometimes use it, too. Piercings and tattoos are also popular, especially lip and labret piercings.

Sounds kinda like Punk to me. Am I correct in that assumption?

My impression is that whatever adjective you use fotomann, you should follow it with "lite"...so punk lite?

"emo" means "emotive" or "emotional" but as a 17 y/o sees it - depression, dark, goth...it's all sorta there, but with more expression, i think.... they want something that looks like Joey's work probly.

The Clash and The Ramones aren't categorized as EMO. They were the Godfathers of original Punk (thankfully).

EMO is short for Emotional as someone pointed out and from my experience, usually refers to mostly indy stuff. There are tons of subcategories like post-indy, and what not.

Very underground and yea, emotional.

Bahaha...nice thread.

Emo is a type of music...but it also represents a certain "style" of dressing and/or acting. Emo kids are a lot like "scene" kids...

It's kinda hard to describe...but it's kinda like punk was in the late 80's/early 90's only a little different. Just a musical style that has spilled over into other portions of life.

Emo music is kinda sad/kinda punkish. It talks a lot about girls...almost always, lol.

emo is the most overused pop-word.

an 'emo' kid back in high school told me it was all about music that said the things you wanted to say but never did say. im pretty sure thats what all music is.

my interpretation of emo is a bunch of guys that say its okay to cry, like on a daily basis, when they drop their cookie on the floor.

hmmm....So, what I'm kinda getting is "emotive punk" as far as a photo shoot would go.

Nothing to do with Emo Phillips, then?

Pretty much....

I'd say jsut take the picture and add a bit of grunge and darken it up a bit and it'd be good to go.

Shoot it like goth, but have the model crying or yelling.

You can dance to Goth (usually depressingly, with arms swaying). Think: The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, also Erasure and Yaz.

You can cry to Emo (usually listening to loud ballads). Also, the hair spikes are higher. Think: The Decemberists, but not The Clash, Rancid, or even early Green Day.

Check out this thread, which includes this gem: "goths get wrecked up, are fuelled on cheap speed and lucozade and party like its 1999 every weekend. emo kids make a career of whining about their ex girlfriend and how broken their heart is."

Goth and emo are two completly different things...

Goth is more dark and haunting and all that jazz, while emo is just more sad about life.

Goth is a little more extreme than emo in my opinion...

Emo is emotional punk derivative music. There are many bands on the edge of it. Get up kids, dashboard confessional, Jimmy eat world. They usually have a whiny singer and melodramatic song styles; it can be brilliant or really annoying.

As some people say... "there ain't no crying in hardcore!"

Bands that are fake or new poppy 14 year old punk without being emo are... Blink 182; sum 41; green day; simple plan; perhaps rancid has a bit more cred to escape this?

I have been labeled emo before in my life, it's not a bad thing or a dangerious thing. like with any other client just talk to them to get a feel for what it is they are asking for

Emo is short of emotional. Usually associated with a type of punk music, dosen't have to be dark or depressive but usually focuses on the sad or gloomy side of life

"Pretty much....

I'd say jsut take the picture and add a bit of grunge and darken it up a bit and it'd be good to go.

Emo is more of just showing emotions usually sadnes I wouldn't say suscidal. Goth is more of the dark side of life, like death depression killing hate rage anger and would say goth is very oppsite of emo in the fact it is almost apathetic (Iknow i just described emotions there but think of someone who has thoese feeling but dosent care about the fact thats the way they feel), so like a dark gloomy numb vs emotional sadness

I agree with asking the client what she is asking for .. but the 14 year age gap, I'd at least like to get on the same wavelength, before a discussion w/ her.

Point in the age gap: As wikipedia put in a style of clothing that is usually associated with Emo is Converse All-Stars shoes. I have Converse All-stars that I love, but I consider them Old Skool from when I grew up in the 80's.
