So it was a long exposure while they were driving past, they would've been a blur, or not shown up at all.
My reaction, if I were in your shoes, would be to explain what a long exposure is, show him some pics in my display, and share my entusiasm for "the art". If he continued being rude then he'd get tit-for-tat.
I suspect you've got a bit of bad luck with the area you live in, though. Around here I doubt anybody would get so angry. You should move up here. ;-)

Betcha it wasn't his wife.
I have had that happen when I wasn't even focusing on a person. "Who said you could take my picture." My reply "Huh, I didn't." They just walked away.
I am pretty careful though. I don't want to offend anyone.
Do "they" still make those right angle lenses where you can aim straight ahead but capture someone/something at a 90 degree angle? |

This guy struck me as the sensitive type when I took his photo.

the guy giving you the bird is great...lol, there are alot of sensitive people out there, like I posted in another thread during the transit strike here in NYC a lady got mad at me and asked me was'nt it against the law to take her pictures or other peoples pictures, so I told no simply if I dont publish them which i was not going to and that it was just a hobby of mine I even showed her that I did not get her anyway. Then told her that its the brooklyn bridge lady people are going to be taking pictures all the time plus there is a transit strike and photographers everywhere. She got mad a mumbled something and walked away.

I kinda thought you had some additional rights while in a vehicle. Even though it's a public road it's still a privately owned vehicle. Some legal matters ( I only know of some involving what police can do, not two civilians) are different when a vehicle is involved. Maybe it doesn't apply, I'm just wondering if somebody knows. |

Yes you can still get those right angle lenses.
Remember that very famous photo of the couple kissing? That was staged because the photographer feared capturing a cheater which were apparently very common where it was shot. ;-) |

Not unless you get inside the vehicle with them. Public road. They can get pissed off, but legally that's all they can do.

I just walk out with my 20mm on my FF body. I aim in one direction and most people never know they are in the picture,

Many people on the forum have said that they offer to mail a copy to the person in the picture when they are confronted. Perhaps you should have offered to mail an 8x10 to his home ;-> |

You have to understand the position of the property owner. For all he knew before you told him you may have been taking pictures for the local paper, an insurance company, the IRS, a realtor, a developer or God knows who else. If it was my property I would want to know why too. The fact that he said it was "ok" after you told him should have held some type of redemption. |
Remember that while you have a right to take pictures, others have a right to speak to you. And people are curious. And some people don't have great social skills--the guy in the pickup may have been having a fight with his wife when he was on the phone.
One thing I've learned is that great photographers see things that neveryone else overlooks. I'll call this the "photographer's eye". A photographer will look at a common, ordinary everyday boring object and take a picture that makes everyone else see that object in a new light. (Many of the blue-ribon winners have done this) Assuming the guy in the pickup owned the barn, he probably saw it so often he didn't notice it. You saw it in a different light and (I hope) were able to convey that vision into a photograph.
A little "shmoozing" of the guy will help--tell him not only that your taking art pictures, but that his barn is better than any other becasue ____________. (I suggest NOT saying something like "that's the most decrepit barn I've ever seen. I wanted to take a picture to show my wife that the owner is even lazier than I am".)
If you do it right, you may end up selling him a print. |

I don't think there's a lot of Mob activity here in Kalamazoo. I just think he was joking around. Basically, the local cigar store has a lounge area that's in the front of the store. There's a big window on the front. This guy and his buddies are always in there watching TV or playing video games. Anyway, this is him about 2 seconds after telling me that I was his #1.

Actually, one of my little ploys was to say I was doing a photography assignment on profiles, and just ask if they minded I use them as my muse. In this town, that really would fly. LOL...Even if they asked where the assignment stemmed from, I could always say the local university and that would fly too. BUT, I opted out bothering.
The main thing for me in this challenge was to break my fear, but I expect no ribbon. I simply do not have the opportunity to enter what I know I will see in this challenge and what I know I can't beat.
My entry is in. It couldn't BE more candid for this area...LOL..and I won't go into detail, but I am sure it will make others smile. The main thing is I did try the hide-in-the-bushes technique, and the harboring-camera-while-in-car technique, and the pretending-not-to-be-shooting-and-only-playing-with-my-settings-technique, and even so much as getting in-peoples-faces-kind of technique. I didn't try the "just ask them" technique, cause then they would have posed, and that wouldn't be candid. So, in my personal achievement I know I have WAY surpassed my goals, but no, in this challenge, I will certainly be no scoring threat. LOL....
=================
Here is a TOTAL out take from a candid I did using the harboring-in-my car technique. Sitting at the corner and panning in. Notice the looks on the faces? NOT happy campers and certainly could have followed me home with that anger. I have a child. I am not about to go that far for a graphic ribbon. LOL...
I got lucky and I pretended to look stupid afterwards and that my camera wasn't working, making them believe the shot never took. But I am not getting paid $50,000 a shot to get a photo of some countries Princess in a bikini in Marocco for a rag mag. This is simply one challenge and one I am personally not going to place a personal score on for my goal, however, as in personal achievement? I have met the goal above and beyond the call of DPC duty! LOL....

i'm sorry you had to deal with such an unpleasant situation! It's kind of scary that the guy kept following you.
I guess to play devil's advocate, though, he might have been worried about what you were doing -- were you a private investigator? Were you planning something nefarious? What were you going to with the pictures? Would they be published without his consent?
For me, I usually ask before taking pictures of strangers. If they say no, I smile, say OK, and make it obvious that I'm not taking a picture of them. Of course with cars, it's impossible to ask first. :)
You said that lots of people in your area don't take well to photos? Are you in a small town?
I hope your next candid session goes better!

On the topic, I got VERY "yelled at" once for taking pictures. My hubby and I were in the US Virgin Islands, and had taken a tram ride to the top of a lookout point.
There was a parrot/bird display at the top, with fantastically colorful birds. I and a few other tourists started snapping photos.
Suddenly, and with a flurry of anger, a woman came screaming at us: "Do NOT - TAKE PICTURES!"
She continued, "I make MONEY From the bird show. You can only take pictures when you pay to see the show. ERASE THAT PICTURE OFF YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA. ERASE IT RIGHT NOW. RIGHT NOW. ERASE IT, I SAID."
I apologized and backed away. Another couple smirked and deliberately snapped one more, of her. (OK, awful, but soooo funny at the same time.)
She went ballistic, pretty much, and started chasing them back to the tram stop!
All in all, she was a horribly rude person. I suppose if the tram/bird area was private property, she had the legal right to determine who/how/when pictures were taken, but still -- she was SO mean. Because of her attitude, we dissed the bird show, even though I'd originally been thinking of seeing it...

That is ONE HELL of a candid if I ever saw one! LOL....Maybe THAT is why I got the looks. Could have been the same couple! LOL...
I'm never astonished at long threads. I have seen them now for 6 years, and before that, I watched them for a few more years through my kids and their boyfriends and what they liked to post about. So long threads to me, usually mean good threads (or controversial) :)
