I have 3 external hard drives....and now 3 computers. 2 desktop and 1 laptop. How do I access the drives with all the computers without going through 1 computer and sharing the files on a home network? I am doing that now but do not like it. I am also running a linksys wireless router.
Any thoughts?
Thanks |

I think some of the Buffalo drives allow you to hook other to it and form a huge NAS, not sure really. Never tried it.
I think this may be th reason that Buffalo came out with their NAS products....

Assign each computer an IP address from within the router.
Create the Same Work Group for each of the computers
Now Restart all three computers and view your Network Neighbourhood.
Within this you will see your new Work Group.
Now access the workgroup to the Computer connected to the external drives.
Here you will see all the Drives accossicated to this computer.
Right click and Map Network Drives that you want to access on any of the other computers.
Now each time your connected to the network or restart you will have a network set up.
You can keep the system with the 3 externals as a server system.
I would really reccommend giving each system a static IP. You will notice much higher rates of speed with this network and might cause your router to crash.
Another great advantage of Static IP is you can then use Remote Desktop to Access any of the other machines remotely.
If this dont make sense PM and I'll get you some info |

You need NAS that supports USB drives. I think that's the only option. I think this one does it and give you 1TB of storage too.

Can you just access each of the computers by their computer_name and access the drives? |

You can use the network storage link from Linksys. You'll need two of them since it has only two USB connections and it will not work with a USB hub. It costs about 80 bucks, here is the link:

I can see which option is cheaper...wow...that buffalo thing is expensive. Probably not a bad idea though....cheaper than buying external drives with that much capacity. I just cant swing it right now.
After buying the new xps and 30 inch monitor from dell........MOMMA HAS ME ON A BUYING FREEZE. I AM ALSO LOCKED OUT FROM ANYTHING WARM AND CUDDLY RIGHT NOW TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
