Ok everyone whatim noticing is you guys are hardly commenting and if you are you usualy only do so if you like a piece of work and you want to praise it. I think as a community dedicated to photography we should try to help each other improve by givving them our critique and letting them know what he like and dont like about the pictures.
to illustrate this a bit id like to show you guys and example of a picture that i entered in the Shapes II challenge. [ link ] as you can see the picture didnt cut off very well(Place: 194 out of 363; Avg (all users): 5.209) yet i have only gotten positive comments(9 in total) and only 2 of those are giving me critique on how i could improve for futur pictures.
So what i am thinking about doing is starting a wave of commenting everytime you vote on a picture. Tell the person what you like and what youdont like in their picture and maybe what youthink they could do better or work on imporving next time they try to take a similar picture. I know this is very time consuming but im sure it would help many people like me improve a lotin photography. Maybe you could try to comment on about 80% of the picture you vote on or maybe 50% to start with or somehting like that.
i know i havent been the best commenter in the past time but now i try to comment on every picture i vote on.

Well...getting such a high percentage of comments to vote ratio isn't a realistic goal.
Lots of people who vote...
...Don't read the forums
...Aren't secure enough in their own photography to feel like commenting
...are like me and lazy or have 20 things juggling at one time
What I think you have done is the right way to get comments..Post your image and let the people inclined to comment have a go :-)
I will comment...
What I like...The perspective is good, the colors are great, the subject is unique
What I see that I might do different...Improve the focus, back up a touch and give a little more foreground and don't cut off the bottom acrobats, Raise your shutter speed so you have everyone frozen, center the pyramid for a stronger composition.
In regards to the challenge and your score...Remember, this is a public voting site and if you don't have everyting spot on you will chip away at your score...and it doesn't take a lot to take you from a top 30 photo to mid pack.
Hope this helps :-D |

| Unfortunately it seems there are many people who just do not want their work critiqued and will take offense if you try to on this site. |

this is very true. and i am surprised that this site doesn't have a box to check before submitting a photo that indicates you welcome more in depth critiques. or something like that.
on some contest pages in PBase (example), people put an asterisk (*) by the title of their photo if they are open to critiques. maybe if people did the asterisk indicator here, then that would clear up this situation..
who knows? just my thoughts. |

I gun for 20%, but I've not made it there yet this challenge... It's tough with nearly 450 images.
Backlighting II
Stats: You have rated 325 of 325 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 44 images (14%) in this challenge.
Recipe (Food) II (01/04/2006 - 01/10/2006)
Stats: You have rated 109 of 110 images (99%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 25 images (23%) in this challenge.
However, you're right about the need for comments which will improve a photog. I tend to pick an images that need improvement instead of the ones I think did well. I don't like the "If I gave you a 7, 8, 9, 10, I left you a comment" mentality. If you have a 7-10 picture you don't need the comments as much as a 1-6 image.

I will now comment on every vote I make. Note, I will no longer be commenting.
That's the problem, I barely have time to vote, and I do try commenting a lot. But hey....i've got my limited. |
