every time theres a challenge I take me shots sort though them and go thats the one. that ones so great. i submit them, and for 2 weeks ive been getting slammed. I think one of the best shots ive done on this site is up for burst of color right now and its only at a 4.7557 =( and now my recipies shot is getting slammed from the commets people dont like it because its not a pretty food shot... but it did day Before During or after Not take a pretty food shot. (dont get me wrong theres nothing wrong with a pretty food shot but thats not what the challenge was restricted to) so now im sitting with a 4.3 hoping that it will go up. It's just driving me nuts that i think i have a great shot, something creative and well composed (and finally well lit) but im still getting that bottom of the barrel scores.

Ok im sorry just needed to get that out.

I feel your pain. I have learned to live with the idea that a pretty picture of a pretty subject will beat out a well-done image of a loathsome subject every time. It's not just here, it's everywhere. We live in an eye-candy culture, plain and simple. Most of us anyway, and that's most of the voters too.

Its hard to exactly know what large groups of people will like. That is one of the challenges here.

In addition to being a great site for learning many different things about photography and being a member of a community....you are faced with the challenge of understanding what attracts a general audience to your photo.

The peoples choice awards were on last night. The people who win there are different than the people who win at the Oscars or Emmys and they are different from the people who win at Cannes..etc

I wish I could give you a secret formula for doing well here...I would have used it a long time ago myself :-p But that is sorta what keeps me coming back...the challenge of figuring it out and watching peoples reactions to what I photograph...and sometimes it ain't pretty :-D

Just look at my scores.... I have years of experience (blah, blah), loads of gear and I have scores that are all over the place. Even this week I have 2 entries almost 2 full points (not 2 tenths..2 full points) apart from each other and the lower scoring photo was 10 times harder! And I am a professional ad guy so you know I don't think my stuff sucks...but lots of others do!! (bastards :-D hehe)

eh, scores don't matter. just take the shots you like and submit the shots you like. i stopped caring to watch my score fluctuate between 4.9 and 5.1 for every single challenge. bleh.
