I can buy an old Gitzo reporter, is it lightweight enough to use in the field for night photography? Or should I look into Benbo/Manfrotto tripods? |

It depends on what model Reporter and what you consider "lightweight"
And just flat out skip the Benbo. That is one awkward tripod to play with. The Gitzo Explorer will put your camera in every position the Benbo will without flopping around like a fish when you go to break it down.

I have a benbo - it is awkward to use . . . . . . I will eventually sell mine - you have to counterbalance it to do flower macros because it is just not stable otherwise. |

Thanks for the anti-Benbo advice. On the pictures it says Gilux Reporter, I don't know if that says enough? It looks old, and weighs about 2 kg (I asked). |

I believe that is an older model. Find out what kind of locking mechanism is employed on the legs to see if you will be comfortable with such a setup. Remember that although the older models are just as sturdy as the current ones many are not as easy to use or as versatile.
If it really weighs just 2Kg that may be manageable for you. The Bogen 3221 which is probably one of the most used tripods in the world weighs more then that and most people feel comfortable carrying them. Again, that depends on you and what you will be doing. I wouldn't go mountain climbing with it. I would however fell quite comfortable carrying something like that through the woods on a day trip.
