bought props at the store and then returned them when done with them?

All the time.

That was common practice among the photo students when I was in school for product shots or other props. I know a girl who put a $2500 bracelet on her credit card, shot it, then returned it. I've told some merchants what I was doing, some have been helpful, others are not too happy. Since return policies are getting less liberal, make sure you understand them. Some props (like produce and underwear) can't be returned. I found this out after buying 200lb of onions for a class assignment.

This was one of my pre-shoot duties working for a commercial photographer way back. They had to have the perfect outfit or prop, but didn't want to buy it or at the least rent it from a wardrobe facility. It was kind of embarrassing returning several female outfits to Nordstrom after the shoot. I also used to have to borrow stuff from different stores for their ads and make sure nothing happened to it, one time being a $30,000 bracelet.

Wowsers! 200 lbs of onions??? Man, you'd have to buy a LOT of liver to go with that!!! :-P

Well, I've never done anything like that for photography (yet!), but, I guess this is a good time to confess a past sin :-), I once got invited by my chief (in the navy) to go fish in a weekend Bass tournament with him at Lake Moultrie, SC. He was a top notch fisherman (kinda like a semi-pro) and had just a totally beautiful bass boat. Well, I wanted much better gear than what I had or could afford at the time, so...yeah, I went and got an awesome, top of the line baitcasting rig, then took it back on monday. I felt bad, but ...that week-end totally ROCKED!!!
