I just moved, and my old roommate was the one with a computer. I tried to use my old old laptop that is only 6GB, and it was so slow I almost threw it out the window. I am seriously in need of some photography very soon, but w/o a computer, my XT isn't doing much.
What I want is to spend $500-$750. That is my entire budget. I need it for photos, internet. I do want something that is nice and fast, but I really don't need/can't afford all the bells and whistles. What would people recommend in that price range. I would like to buy something this weekend, so let me know what you think I should buy and where to buy it from.

Even though I am a mac person you can get a decent dell laptop starting at 499 or even a decent desktop at that price now. Which would be usable till you can upgrade for your photos and internet.
if you had a monitor/keyboard & mouse you can even get the Apple/mac Mini for like $599

Laptop from office depot looks like a nice deal, so does the desktops from Dell.

Try looking HERE. We've bought 2 massive computers from them, prices were great! Customer service isn't "awesome" (India based), but we've ended up getting the help we needed both times. Quite a few peeps my husband works with have bought from them as well, and are very happy with their computers.

My brother just bought his g/f a Dell notebook (my recommendation) and it's a very fine piece of equipment. I highly recommended it and now recommend it even more. Dell, quite honestly, offers the most bang for the buck of any major manufacturer.
I'm on a two-year old Dell Desktop. Not a single problem from it and I put it through pure Hell. Still very fast and reliable.

| Dont know where you live... but almost all COmputer stores have their own brand of computer... and start with a "barebones" computer wiht a mohterboard, hard drive, memory and onboard sound and video.. that is very inexpensive... that is upgradeabl. Maybe a barebone system with a really good video card in it will be best for you, one that can be upgraded when you need an upgrade (such as momory, dvd burner etc) |
