The last one was the best. Focus ain't "spot on" in any of the three, but I do understand the conditions are REAL hard. Actually the last one gets better and better the more that I look into it. |

Yeah the lighting conditions in these places make it real hard, I went to the Manchester Evening News Arena in UK on a media pass back at the end of october and was suprised to see the FMX in the event line up but forgot my shooting schedule, I quickly managed to get from the show floor all the way to where the bikes would be flying past within about 10-15 metres of me... BUT Having to readjust what I was shooting and having to learn on the fly I didn't get much that was crisp or exposure was good, I booted the ISO up to 800 and used a good flash, I learnt alot in 10 minutes and had a hoot shooting these guys but heres one of my faves from that event (more on my website)

Nice photos, I agree the last one is best. Were they taken with the 100-400mm?

This is very hard to shoot. I've shoot Vodafone FreestyleMx Lisboa last year for two magazines and it was the first time I had shoot indoors motorsports. I began with 1/250 sec. at iso800 and ended with 1/650 sec. at iso 1600 in order to don't get blurry images. I didn't have fast lenses except my sigma 105mm macro that I've used a lot. But I ended up with my 70-300mm f4-5.6 at iso 1600 at maximum aperture because of the extra reach. That's why I'm looking for a used 80-200 f2.8 AF-S.

I think they are pretty decent shots considering poor lighting and not having a faster aperture to work with. My biggest issue is the busy background. If possible perhaps shooting at a higher angle would have helped, that is moving in closer so that you would be looking up at the cyclists against the ceiling as background instead of the crowd. And of course a faster aperture lens would allow a shallower depth of field to add to the separation of subject from background.
