I've been looking at dslr's, the <$1000 range, and I have read a bunch of great posts re: which to buy and go for good glass, etc. Before I buy though, is there any reason to wait 6 months? Is there any new camera in the Nikon d70/ Canon Rebel 350xt type category that is set to "drop" as they say anytime in the near future that might be worth the wait?

Nikon started shipping the d200 ($1700) in November, but I've yet to see much affect on the d50/d70/d100 prices ($600/$900/$1200).

And the successor to the 20d will be coming out next month but that will likely not affect the price of the 350d. However, it will affect the price of 20d's so you may be able to pick one of those up for about the price you're looking to spend. I just bought a used 20d for $800 but that's not a common price yet.

My personal feeling is that the next Nikon to be replace will be D70s, although I don't know if it will be in 6months. The Rebel XT is relatively new and doubt that it will be replaced in 6months.

If you wait 6months to possibly save some money, then you should also take into account the loss of joy from photography for 6months as well. It's a very personal decision. If you play the wait game, something better and cheaper will always be coming down the road relatively frequently if you consider all the dslr makers out there.

there will always be "the next big thing" coming out. There's good stuff out right now, I say don't wait - just go for it and don't beat yourself up when new products come out. It's just more time you have to shoot.

Yeah, but had I waited one more week before buying my mom her iPod, it'd have a bigger screen and do video too, and be much thinner.

There are times to wait. And a month before "release time" is a good time to wait just a while longer.

As for the upcoming updates. I think we'll see the following:

Canon 1Ds MKIIn in the near future.

Canon 30D I'm not so sure of...but perhaps, it was the first Digic II.

I really want to hear Canon announce an "ultrasonic dust removal system". I know they're working on a dust removal system. They're add it, so will Nikon. Or some equivalent. Probably at the end of 2006. But if they release before hand I'll be quite happy.

It seems to me that digital cameras have taken the same path as personal computers. The period of time from release to obsolence has become quite short as company's compete for market share utilizing the most current technologies.

Given this short "new technology" time it is best to consider your purchase of the camera body is at most a 2-3 year or less investment before you may want to replace it.

So as you will read on DPC time and again, it is the camera system you are buying into. Camera system as in lenses, accessories, etc. The glass will last but the bodies will only stay for a short period.

I would also consider the lenses carefully as your replacement body for the camera you are about to buy may be a full size sensor and not be compatible with the (Canon) EFS lenses.

My personal recomendation is this:

Buy the best sytem you can afford. Plan to replace the body in a couple of years. The body you buy today will still serve very well as a backup or secondary camera that will be compatible with all of your lenses. If you have to "break the bank" to afford the very top camera and will not feasibly be able to replace it in a couple years, direct your $$$ toward the lenses and get a more cost effective body. Then as you build your lense collection, begin saving for your next body.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for the advice; It wasn't really a money issue,or possible regrets, because I know that the big camera companies will always replace products before they become too cheap, but I was wondering about the new systems from the major manufacturers.

I just appreciate the industry following types keeping the less industry savvy in the know...
