Why did this score so low? Was it the blood? The title? Is realism too much for this site?
I noticed from a few of the comments that more then a few people probably thought this was a faked or set-up shot. I think this may come from what people have come to expect from this site more then the content of the shot.

realism rarely scores well at dpc. perhaps it was a bit too graphic and grim for a challenge that seemed to be based in humor. i think it's a great photojournalistic image but, sadly, if it can't be put on the front of a greeting card, it won't score well here. that's why getting favs are much more important to me than scores.
just my thoughts.

Well thank you. It didn't get any favs either.
It is rather on the "don't cheer me up" list, but I was walking out in front of my gallery and it happened. More importantly, it happened during the "Opps" challenge. I thought it fit.

I gave this an 8 because it thought it was one of the better executed images in the challenge and had an interesting story behind it.
Perhaps voters thought the challenge entries should all be light and fluffy. |

It could go on a 'Get Well Soon' card.

I also gave it an 8. I felt it really met the challenge, had nice color, and (as a law enforcement officer working in the crime capitol of the nation for '03 and '04) very realistic. They were probably saying "He's definitly getting charged with resisting!" |

I actually scored it quite high because it DID fit the challenge requirements and it's a great shot! I've noticed since being here a short time that usually things that are "staged" tend to score higher. While I think it's good for me to expand my photography style and skill by learning more about studio-style shooting, the name of the site is all about "digital photography." This does not necessarily differentiate between candid/photo-j/studio shots, which is a shame because all of those genres fall under the DPC guidelines.
For what it's worth, I loved the picture.

It got a 5.5 and finished in the top 1/3 of the challenge. If you thought it should do better than that, study what's ahead of you in the challenge. You have two choices - play for yourself or play for your audience. If you play for yourself, you will score low most of the time. If you play for your audience, you wouldn't submit this on dpc.
Your choice.

I had my girlfriend take a look at you picture. I waited until she was looking at the monitor before I scrolled the pic into view so I could see her reaction. She said "That's f@#$%^g disgusting!" To me, it's a great shot, but perhaps her reaction helps explain the lower than expected score. |

I like this shot, particularly because it doesn't tell the whole story.

i was speaking generally rather than specifically with regard to favs. like i said, i think it's an excellent photo and it certainly meets the challenge topic...just not "touchy-feely" enough for the typical voter.

From the looks of their reaction (not caught in this particular image) I would say they were probably saying something more like "Is he breathing? I wish the ambulance would hurry up and get here. I wish that a-hole with the camera would get the hell out of here. We're getting sued." or something along those lines.

It looks like a grab shot off of "Cops". Probably a better entry for a challenge about "Newspaper" or maybe a challenge about making a political statement.
Bottom line....this is a popularity contest and people vote for what they like and there you are :-|
I like photojournalistic style shots...the shot below was a shot that was very hard to get....my score...an O.K. 5.8 something but I thought a lot higher of it than the voters...
By the way...I got a 1 from some scum sucking inbred idiot that likes to urinate on stuff..:-P..(Inside joke form another thread) :-D

a) it needed a deeper DOF for me to like it
b) it's gruesom, action...but rather emotionless
It got a 5.5, that's not a bad score... |

You got a one? My image got 41 votes of 3 or under. While I had no expectation of this image winning, because of the blood and the subject matter, It did not deserve 14 ones. The image is well composed, well lit, and though there is some background and action blur, the main subject is crisp.
Mavrik is right on the point of know your audience. I knew when I entered this It would not soar. No sour grapes, just trying to figure out what make people tick.

I said the "1" comment tongue in cheek :-D
I could agree with all of your positive statements..but..that would be my personal opinion...
I think the biggest hurdles every human being has to deal with is criticism.
As a person in P.R., Marketing, Sales etc for 20 years...I have skin as thick as oak...but personal critique is one of the big reasons for failure in a lot of life.
Why? We all want to be loved, admired, respected for our talent and intelligence..problem is..most people are thinking the same thing for themselves and the conflict of my opinion versus yours is eternal.
Anyway...the DP Challenge thing is always a game more than anything else...can I persuade more DP Challenge style voters to my side of the fence than you...nothing more or less :-D
I don't take it as the definition of whether a photo has merit in other ways.

Didn't vote on this one but the title (I think) is absolutely wrong. It's like you're trying to make a joke out of something that really isn't funny. Completey awesome photo.
..My husband just walked by & thinks the title is great by the way! :0) So who the hell knows! |

This version has a little more emotion, but the composition is not as strong.
As far as DOF, that is real hard to get at 1.4. It was either give up DOF in favor of a sharp subject or blur the whole image by shooting below the 1/40 sec I was already at.
There are a lot of trade offs involved in low light action scenes. No time to set up a tripod. You can't ask the subjects to hold a pose. A flash would draw even more unwanted attention and probably would have gotten me removed from the scene.

So I'm curious what the story on this really was...
Was the guy in a bar fight? Hit by a car? Hit by a cop? Hit by a cop car after a bar fight? |

It looked too real to me. I dont know if it was or not, but if it was i think it is disrepectful to the man on the ground.
why didnt it do well - because this is a stocky site, not a photojournalism site. |

Me too. By reading some of the comments on this photo, some are under the assumption that it depicts police brutality or something (because of the title I suspect) when no one actually knows what's going on. Maybe he was a drunk in car accident that just plowed into a family van full of kids.

The story. I was several seconds late for the main event. The police felt compelled to give me their version, I guess because I had a camera. I didn't have to ask them. They said the man was starting trouble down the street outside a bar. When they questioned him his name came back with a warrant so they handcuffed him. It was only after they tried to put the man in the car that he began to struggle so the officer said they just let go of him. Thus, according to the officer's account, my title was accurate.
Everyone else at the scene said that after he began to struggle one of the officers lost his temper and slammed him face first into the pavement.
A grain of salt either way.
