LOL.....
I seemed to have a hard time with this. I mean, I don't know how many times I went out riding and said "Ooo, that would be a great backlighting entry". Only to realize the light was behind ME, and shining ON the image and not behind the image. Like the sun was behind me, shining on the image, making shadows to the after ground of the image. LOL....Is this just me or what? I mean, the shots came out great, but I was a little mistyfied on this and getting the light behind the image, but standing in front of the subject the light was shining behind. :)
It all seems so simple when doing an indoor shot. You get something, shine a light behind it, stand in front of it and shoot. But when outdoors I seem to have a hard time finding the backlighting on the image. SO frustrating!

At night I don't do well. I have 5 dead pixels and they usually show. With advanced editing I can usually wean them out, but not in basic. :(
It's ok. I did get one off and will just let it fly. Probably a 5.0 for score status, but maybe I will be pleasantly surprised, OR try something else in the meantime. But if not, at least I have one in.
Bad Weather would be NEAT. Not sure they will do that though, since it isn't bad weather all over at any given time, unless they expand on what bad weather can mean in description, or there are creative ways to portray it. Hey, people can really make their own, or simulate it somehow too. LOL...
I got my first lightening shot last week. BUT, when I went to erase a frame, I erased it on format and wiped out my whole photo card. LOL...Thankfully it wasn't the best lightening shot I have seen, so I dealt with it ok. But would love to get more. Just waiting for a storm, and in Florida, usually that is everyday about 3:00 central time. You can practically set your clocks to them. :)

try despeckle on a really low setting for dead pixels in basic. That usually works. |

couple outdoor examples of mine - where the subject isn't a silohoutte.

I like the first one a lot. The second one? Where is the light on that one? Is it on the other side of the fence or behind you?
What confuses me is what angle is appropriate for outdoors. To me the second shot with the fence, it looks like the light is coming from the right or left and not behind the fence. So I guess the angle of the light, as long as it is not directly on the subject is appropriate?

Thanks DrArchoo. I have tried that in the past, but not for dead pixels. I didn't see a change much in the photo so I rarely use it. I will see what happens.

This was a backlight shot I did in my back yard .. a ray of sun was coming from behind the leaf thru other leaves. The leaf itself was in a really shaded area so it wasn't easy to get. I was practically laying on the ground with camera in hand.

Beagleboy, what makes the sunset shot not a silouette though? Or did you just use that as an example?

If you like those subjects with the light in front of them, go back at another time of day with the sun on the opposite side. I had to do that with my entry... had to go back in the early morning before work. |

Great shots, Beagleboy, particularly the jet and the pigeon skull!
I'm a little confused, though..."Rage" and the golden sunset one look like silhouettes to me...aren't they NOT supposed to be?
(Oh...and could somebody tell me quickly why my profile says I killed 3 threads? I didn't kill anything, that I know of...what's it mean?) :) |

A silhouette is a backlit subject. I don't believe the challenge excludes any specific category of backlighting...

The lighthouse and foreground look like silouettes. There are no sillouettes allowed in the backlighting challenge. So I was just wondering what you thought of the sunset shots as backlighting.
If you do a sunset, for the most part, what is seen before hand is silouetted. A tree, bushes, tree tops, rocks, etc.

The rules state: "Here's the catch: the subject must NOT become a silhouette..." That's what is throwing me, lenkphotos. The first time I read through it, I missed the "NOT" and thought it said they should be a silhouette. Glad I caught that.

:( Wish I could do that with mine, but it would definately end up a silouette if I did. But, I have another idea. I just have to ask permission to shoot it though. LOL...

the subject can't be a silohoutte in this backlight challenge.

Yeah, I think the key here is transparency. |
