I love my S1, It's no SLR, but it works great, and i have no problem with it. Produces great quality with the 3.2 megapixels too.
Edit: the 10X zoom is great... It is mechanical, but you get used to it extreamly fast. The only problem would be getting your hands on one... if you manage, i think it's worth it.

DPReview.com will allow you to set criteria and will list cameras that meet your criteria.
For example, what's the wide angle end you want? How much telephoto? What media? RAW or RAW/JPEG? etc.
Personally, I have an S1 IS and I like it; the S2 IS is even better but a fair amount bigger.
Another option: the Canon S60 does RAW and JPEG, is compact, and is like a Canon G5 without the swivel LCD (in DPReviews words).
I like the Lumix line: great lenses (some Leica), antishake built in, and good zoom. But make sure you can live with the noise.
Make sure you get a camera with Av and Tv (manual settings for aperture and shutter speed), if you want something with creative control!
There's lots of info on dpreview.com

I had tried out the Canon S2, & I found it to be very heavy (for me), as I continuously hold a camera for hours depending on what I'm shooting. Because I felt the need for more zoom in certain areas, I've purchased a Kodak Z740, with 10X optical zoom, for under $300. It's very lightweight & only needs 2AA batteries, compared to most needing 4AA. I'm very happy with it.
Wanted to add that I was looking into the Nikon cameras. They have some high zoom P&S that have RAW format too (or the Nikon brand equivelant).

I know it busts your budget, but consider waiting to get the Nikon D50 for $200 more. I really like my D70 and the D50 is almost the same camera for a lot less. |

Hi Yakatme
The Canon S1 and S2 are great cameras that fall within your budget, and the Panasonic FZ30 comes real close too. You might compare all these models at www.dpreview.com
Good luck

I just upgraded from an Olympus C-720 w/ 8x optical zoom. (I think the latest version, C-750, has 10x or maybe more). Takes very nice pictures, nice optics with f/2.8 at the wide end. Sensor in mine was noisy at 400 (max) ISO and suffered from some purple fringing in high-contrast areas, but maybe they've improved that since. My main qualm with it was start-up time and shutter lag, which may be improved now too.
