OK everyone, I talked to my dad, the outdoors man, and he said since we are only there a couple days there is just too much to see and we'd need to figure out if we want to go west, middle, or east.
East - Canyonlands (Has canyons and arches)
Middle - Escalante (Has water and canyons)
West - Zions (Known for its "breathtaking" narrows)
He suggests the Escalante region because it's free and has less tourists.
Calf Creek is really fun, the water is frrrrrrreeeezing even in the middle of summer, but it's VERY beautiful. Its an easy pie hike into the falls.
(not my photo)
There are also some really cool slot canyons that are highly photographic. (Peek-a-boo is a famous one)
It really all depends on where people want to go, my dad knows all the best places everywhere. So lemme know! :)

Yeah, no more trips to arches or canyonlands. It's way too over photographed. j/k Couldn't resist.
I'll try to make it wherever you guys decide. Moab area may have more iconic image oppurtunities (delicate arch, mesa arch, drive down to monument valley), but the others are cool with me.

Count me in as well. Although I have never been to Ancient Kiva in Caynolands I have the directions. The Moab area would be a nice start and offer hotels for those who wanted and great camping is not far away. Plus the Moab Diner!

I'd second Escalante, but beware that the best places there are miles from paved roads and may not be everyone's cup of tea. |

I think the important thing to remember is the very short time frame for the GTG. To really get the most out of the weekend, you should stick to iconic areas that are easily accessible. Maybe everyone doesn't mind hiking a day just to get to the location, I don't, but then again, it's easy for me to get back there to shoot other stuff.

Count me in. I like Capital Reef, then we could drive over Thousand Lakes to the Escalante area and on to Bryce Canyon. OR go a little north to Goblin Valley for the hoodoos, then 8 miles to Little Wild Horse Canyon for the slot canyon experience. Lots of options, guys! |

Yes ... I will be packed for a trip in early May. Capital Reef National Park offers the beautiful red and white sandstone of southern Utah, near-by we can find the Fremont River, the small intimate town of Torrey, a short drive up Boulder Mtn for a forest/wooded scene or big-sky horizon; that area seems to have it all and is centrally located. Thousand Lakes Campground just a mile or so north of Torrey offers cabins or tent sites, even RV sites and has a chuck-wagon meal available at supper-time. The campers and the mattress people could stay within feet of each other. No matter where ... I am there. |

Just outside of Capital Reef I know a seldom-visited wall of pictographs that are quite amazing. Here's a sample:
I also love Panorama Point, just as you enter Capital Reef from the West.
I am READY for some southern Utah scenery! Come ONNN, May! |

I'll put in a plug for the Capitol Reef area. These are a few shots within the park. They have minor adjustments, but nothing major. Some of them are even in mid-day light. With the gulches, you can shoot throughout the day.

Rebecca,
I'm up for Capitol Reef, drove by a few times, never really spent any time. For what's it's worth I have a park pass.

I've PM'd him about the thread, but sometimes it takes him a few days to get his e-mail. See what you can do.

I'd really like to go, but I'm still not sure yet if I can make it or not. Becky, can you put me down as a maybe? I'll have to get back to you.

Quick summary on base location:
Not much support on hard to get to spots (hiking or long travel)
Moab - close to Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Dead Horse Point SP, petroglyphs and the slickrock. Good motels and nearby camping. This site has both on same site: Moab Rim
and another: Riverside Oasis
Capitol Reef area (Torrey, Utah) - Capitol Reef NP, nearby Petroglyphs, Fremont River, Boulder Mountain, slot canyon, Fish Lake and more. Camping and cabins on one site. Here's the lodging site: Thousand Lakes
I'm going to eliminate Page from the discussion (unless you yell) as it is further away for most, and the sites are less accessible.
It's time to vote (express opinions - strong, moderate or mild) on one of the base sites. These lodging places can fill up, so I'd like us to make a decision and get some reservations. (Pushy, pushy, aren't I?
edited to add petroglyphs to Moab

Canyonlands has newspaper rock if you want petroglyphs in the moab area. Actually the south entrance is near monticello. I know the Moab area pretty well, I'm no help as a guide on the others.

Just caught on to this thread. You can put me down for a "maybe" the weekend of May 5th out of Moab. I'm returning from South Carolina that week and will then have some time. Always did want to see this area from somewhere other than 35,000 feet! I'll confirm as soon as I finish arranging the SC trip. |

Done. I love the San Juan Islands! Anacortes, the ferry and the islands are all on my "Must visit again" List. What a great place to live - almost as nice as Utah. ;-) |

Yup - both are beautiful but certainly different! I look forward to the change of pace and scenery so I'll be working on making this fit in. |

this sounds great - just spent my Christmas down there - have family in Monticello
//www.democard.com/photo/christmas/
Some of the prettiest mountain lakes (read ponds) up on Blue Mountain, with deer a plenty every evening right off of the road - they will let you drive right up to them most of the time. A salt lick and a long lens will have you shooting wildlife for hours if that's your thing.
As you can see from my Christmas photos the mountain sheep are around too, these where just outside of Arches with 135mm lens, so they let me get pretty close.
I think you should probably count on me and probably my 18 year old son to be there. We'll drug Alecia (pearlseyes) and bring her too. :-) She should be shooting with a new DSLR by then -
Edit - Disclaimer - most of these shots were taken as graphic elements for a web site being designed by one of my clients - I'm not in the habit of showing off photos with roads cutting through the bottom corner! ;-)
