Okay, I have had my Rebel XT for a few months now, and I have some questions that I know the knowlege base here at DPChallenge can help me with. The first question is in regards to file structure. When I plug my cf card into a reader and open it, there is a root folder called "DCIM" and in that folder there are several others. These folders are called "240canon" and "239canon" for example. Why is this root folder necessary and is there any way to get rid of it. Even more importantly why are these sub folders necessary and why are they seperated? I didn't power down the camera and the amount of pictures vary as to how many are in these sub folders, I can't find any rhyme or reason for the dileniation between 239 and 240 for example. What I would like is just some raw files in a root folder. Am I doing something wrong?

As an afterthought, has anybody else lost the metal decal that shows what shooting mode you are on? mine fell off early in the camera's life and I actually superglued it back on but it fell off again and again and is now lost. Is this common at all?

thanks in advance.

It's almost universal for cameras to create a subfolder off the root directory for their images. There is a very OLD reason for this. The FAT format that is still used for memory cards is a relic of the DOS days; the root directory is limited to 256 files by the FAT file system. Subdirectories, however, do not have this limitation. That's the real reason for the DCIM directory. As for the additional subdirectories, that's just Canon's way of organizing. A new one is created every 100 photos. If you delete in-camera, they may contain less, but never should contain more than 100 shots, and a new one should always be created starting with "img_XX01", in other words, the last image in any folder should be "img_XX99."

Actually, the last image in any [full] folder would be "img_XX00."

Wouldn't that be the first image?

Unless they've changed it, they in fact did have it arranged so the last image in, say, folder 100 was Img_0200, and the first image in folder 101 was 0201. Crazy but true, at least for my old 10D. With the 5D, you can change this behavior.

My 300D works the same way.

I believe you can change the numbereing from sequential form day 1 to start a new sequence with each erasure of the CF card or something like that - but i don't recomend it. My last camera was that way and i had WAY too many duplicate file names after a while. Still have issues at times when i go back thru 2004's files.

If you should ever have to flash/update the firmware in the rebel, you load that file in teh DCIM area. So beware if you try and put things there that the camera might try to run...

It's a stupid thing, I agree, don't worry about it and just take more pictures. It works for me. :)
