I'm so excited about this afternoon...
A friend/neighbor is a firefighter. He works for a fire department ON a large military base. I've been invited onto the base this afternoon to shoot a controlled burn (basically a house burned on purpose for training) AND he's promised a tour of the ship yards and helipads :D Says I can shoot as long as I'm with him.
I'm soooooooooo stoked!
Any tips????

Oh oh oh! Fire.... backlight.....oh oh oh....
I only have 3g memory, but I'll take it all! And I think the 70-200 and 50mm and a couple of batteries (just in case). :)
And monopod! (just thought of that)

I went through some of those when I was in the navy. The little buildings and stuff don't look like much sitting there, but MAN, when they start the fires!!! Easy to forget it's 'training'. It's really something! You should really enjoy yourself :-)
...oh, and great idea to keep in mind 'backlighting' :-)
edit to add: Remember, there's a free study going on too !

See if they'll let you INSIDE!!! Also, If you are in a dark area and try to use a flash and have firefighters in turnout gear in the photo be prepared to have a very dark photo. The reflective stripes overload my Fuji. Another thing, try both still captures and motion blur captures. Sometimes you can get a really cool effect with motion blur.
Here are a few from our last training burn...

Those are some cool shots, Nathan. I think I'll shoot from a distance, I'm guessing it will be waaaaaay too hot for my camera to get very close.

Okay......definitely have a problem! They're guuuuuuuud, BUT, I think I have 2 challenge entries in the ~400 shots and since they are similar in several ways, I can't post any!!!! I so wanna share! It was the best time, just me and all those hunky.......I mean firemen lol They were really great, let me shoot anywhere I wanted, posed when I asked them to, took me for a ride in an ambulance to go see the firehouse!! :)

Ammend post to add: My friend/neighbor/firefighter invited me to come photograph the training and got me the clearance to enter the military base, so for him, I will give a CD of the entire shoot as a gift (he doesn't know yet).
Every other person on site wanted to know how to get copies or see the shots. I was bold. Brave even!.... I gave them all business cards (and left a few on the buletin board) and told them they could view and purchase prints of their shots within 48 hours via my website.
It was only after a post here recently that I started thinking more about missed sales opportunities and I'm very proud tonight that I was more assertive than usual.
