question. I joined this site last October and posted three entries in 2005. I own a small business and finding time for my hobby is scarce. However, my question is, should I submit more entires of what I know are marginal shots that I had little time to compose and edit, or fewer entries of my better work? I have a goal of entering 30 entries in 2006 but work may get in the way of making all those "better works". I know that even by submitting "lesser works" I will learn from the challenges and comments and that is my goal ... to learn. Any suggestions from you more experienced DPC'ers? Thanks ...

I'm not more experienced. In fact, i'm in a similar place. I first picked up a camera to *really* try to learn photography this summer. Quickly got bored with a P&S, got a film SLR and got hooked. Just got a D70s as a present. I have decided that the only way i can get better is to force myself to participate, and hope for feedback from the folks that know what they are doing - and the ones, like me, that are learning. Good luck with your decision.

Ugh, and my scores on the current challenge are enough to make me rethink this position...

Last year I entered volume - this year I am going to try to make sure my entries mean something to me personally. This means I will enter less, but should have more quality shots (barring the Oops entry that had already been submitted when I decided upon this course). I still may not always score well, but at least I will be proud of what I submit. You can still learn alot from the other entries. I plan on voting on every challenge, whether I enter or not.

I try to enter as often as i can, I feel that the more i do it the better I'll become. I feel like i need the practice and the feedback and the only way to get either is to keep at it. The challenges force you to do it. If you just in it for the scores than only enter the shots you had the time for but if your in it to learn then just keep at it.

I'd enter when you like your shot - if you don't have time, don't enter. When you do have a lot of time, enter. It's really tough competition if you don't put your best effort in...(as I've found out with several last minute entries lately!)

I believe in trying more than I am comfortable with. I'll go out an attempt a shot, style or technique that I'm not sure about. Then, I'll take the best shot of the group, do my best with the shot in the time and ability I have. Then it gets entered.

I've been surprised at the shots that others like when I didn't think they really worked. Others I've loved and didn't find a following here.

That has been good information and will serve me well when I shoot for others. I will always have the images I've shot for myself.

The photo-a-day project has got me out shooting more regularly. Already 2 shoots have resulted in challenge entries. After having an entry really bomb fairly early in my DPC membership I decided only to enter images I'm happy with. Now I no longer care how they score, they work for me.

Personally I see no reason to enter marginal shots, the chances of you actually getting "constructive criticism" on anything but a Critique Club comment is quite low. I'm not saying it never happens as I'm well aware that some of the more dedicated DPCers try really hard to give good comments. Unless you score at the high or low extremes you'll be starved for input anyway, average is too common for most voters to attempt commenting on all.

In my opinion, you can learn a huge amount by voting on the entries of others. Even when not in the challenge yourself. When you learn to see the errors and triumphs made by others, you can learn to effectively critique your own work.

Most importantly of all, find yourself. It's no good shooting an image or two every week for this rather insular community unless all you care about is another virtual ribbon. The voting base here can be fairly narrow minded at times, with some true works of art scoring low because they fail to see the photographers interpretation of the challenge brief.

DPC is what it is. If entering every challenge encourages you to get out and shoot more, then I say whole-heartedly do it. If you can shoot for every challenge and still shoot what you want, then do it. If you barely have time to shoot what YOU want, then shoot for yourself and enter what happens to fit a challenge. You will be happier in the long term I assure you...
