Under basic rules would it be legal to fade a USM using any method other than normal? ie Fade USM using screen

No, not in basic. You can fade it, but only in normal mode.

quick answer -- only normal mode is legal

K, I thought so, but had to ask, because I like the way the USM is looking with a fade using darken. But, I'll fix 'er up under normal.
