I've been saving for a 20d and I'm getting impatient :(

My original goal was to try for the upgrade to a dlsr, but not sell my 717 and keep it for backup.

I could probably get close to $500 for my 717 and acessories. And I am rethinking about holding on to it. Has anyone else had this dilemma, and if so what did you do? Any regrets either way?

I have the camera, in excellent condition; HVL-1000 flash w/bracket, a 2x teleconverter, wide angle, polarizer, star, nd4, and uv filters, about 1 gig in memory sticks with the silver Sony stick case, 1 battery, original charger, strap and cords, as well as the original box.

Keep or sell?

I could not imagine letting go of mine.

So, I would keep it.

i have a nikon n90s and a minolta maxxum 7 i now used digital and i cant get rid of either of them and i have had very very generous offers. so i know exactly how you feel. i would keep it especially a 717 its a great camera! good luck

Hard choice... hell, I still have my Nikon CoolPix 950 and it has ducktape holding the battery door shut. Can't bring myself to throw it out though. Still use an antiquated Minolta 600si for all my 35mm needs.

My first impulse would say keep it. At least until you actually have the new camera in hand and then you can sell it and buy ya some sweet glass :-)

Well, I think I'm going to bed and will think about it. I'm pretty sure I'll just hang tight and keep it...taking longer to make the dslr purchase. It's tempting, though.

I have had the 717 since June of 2003 and it's a great camera. It's funny how you do get attached :p

Well, if anyone knows anyone needing Realtor services nationwide, let me know. I work for Coldwell Banker and would be happy to set up a referral! :) I guess I just need to work harder and get those commissions rolling in.

From what I understand the 717 has superior IR performance so if you're into that type of photography you should keep it.

I have upgraded several times and I can tell you from experience that once you get a new camera you don't use the old one. When I got my Digital Rebel my old Minolta DiMage 7i sat on a shelf for months not being used. I finally decided it was time to sell it. When I got my 20D my Rebel sat in a backpack for a while as well. Once again I realized I would never used it again and sold it. Why have a camera lying around when it could be useful to someone else? Unless you know you will absolutely NEED that camera, I say sell it. You can use the money towards your new toy :D Besides, once you use the 20D you'll never want to shoot with the Sony again.

I've had to sell a camera to upgrade twice and other times I have held on to my old ones. But the attachment has proven to be 99% sentimental. They are mostly just collecting dust. If it's the straw the breaks the camel's back so that you can get the 20D, I'd say cut loose the Sony. The 20D is an amazing camera.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm voting sell.

1. You will be able to buy more accessories for your new DSLR.
2. The resale value of that camera will only go down
3. This isn't a point and shoot. The 717 is really quite big. I can imagine if you had a small unit that you might want to keep that in case you don't want to lug your whole rig around, but the 717 being so large, it doesn't serve that purpose.
4. Time to move on.

I'm in the same boat with you, Judy. I have my 20D now and love it, but my 717 was so good to me.... I hate to part with it. True, I haven't taken a single shot with it since I got the 20D, but I think I'll keep it a while anyway. Its a good back-up camera for events (at least that's the justification I'm using). :)

Yep I had the same problem when I sold my Nikon 4300, loved that little camera, still cant believe I got rid of it, but I wish I did not get rid of it sometimes. Its not an easy decision to make, your gonna luv you new camera but sometimes may wish you had your other. Then again you never use your old camera, you never really know..

Sell it.
Once you experience a dSLR, you won't use the Sony anymore. If it was a pocket cam, maybe.

I sold my S602 as part of the fundraising for my Rebel. I don't miss it for a second.

Actually, i got teh rebel about 2 weeks before selling the Fuji - had to do comparisons ya know, and well, the Rebel blew it away in so many areas I had no probalems selling it as i knew i'd never use it again.

I'd keep it, Judy...

there are times when a smaller camera is nice to have, for sticking in your pocket for a quick photo.
Besides... i NEVER let anyoen use my dslrs... so you can hand it to whomever when they want to take a picture.. Plus that sweety hubby of yours might start using it

I guess I would have to agree here, unless there is some advantage, size or perhaps you could bring it some places without risk of leaving it in a car or checking a bag, and you wouldn't care if it was broken or stolen; otherwise, sell it.

My purpose for hanging on to the 717 is strictly for a backup. I have had a camera fail on me during vacation and it is so frustrating. If I am doing a wedding or portrait shoot or on vacation, I think I would rest easier knowing I had a back up I was entirely comfortable with. At least until I can afford a back up body for the dslr.

The 717 is relatively small, in my opinion. It tucks nicely into my center console of my car, or even in my purse.

I have decided to hang on to it at least for the time being. I have a big trip coming up in June and if the only way to get the dslr before the start of May is to sell, I probably will. Otherwise, I believe patience will be a virtue. :)

Thanks for the thoughts.

You can keep it for backup if being without camera for a little while is a big deal to you. However if the the camera you have is not portable it will not be much use to you. I keept my Canon S40 because I can take it with me all the time. It fits in most pockets.

Thats the same issue I have. I have a Nikon N55 that I haven't parted with after buying my D50. Wasn't sure whether I wanted to go totally digital. Haven't even touched or looked at the N55 since I put the D50 in my hand.

My question is (sorry if this is a dumb one) what do you use for printing? Do you have high end home printers or use photo centers?

I refering to your basic 4x6 family photo album type stuff.

I vote for sell.
If you really need a backup, it would probably be better to buy a Drebel as well as the 20D then at least you can share accessories, it save you carring around 2 flashes, sony and CF cards etc.

SELL IT!!!!

In about a year or two you wont get more than $100-$200 bucks for it. I sold my Olymus E-20N with a full range of accessories and that only garnered me about $600. The depreciation on digital cameras and accessories is exponential.

If you can get the $500. Do it...and buy the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di. You will be 10x happier doing that then you will be if you kept it. If you keep it, this is what will happen. You won't be able to get what you feel you'd want for it if you sold it so you will find yourself giving it away to a niece or nephew in a year or two telling them it's a real nice camera.

When I got the 717, I gave him my Mavica 92 and he really likes that camera. He is a sweetie, but has no interest in my 717 and neither does my daughter. They are both strictly point and shooters.

To me having a backup is important, and convienient.

A backup is insurance for the unknown future.

A backup is convienient in those cases where you want two differant lens available at the same time.

IMO.

I sold my 707 to get the rebel. However, there was a gap between the selling and receiving, so I was camera-less.

If you need the money from the sell to make the buy, I would advise waiting until the last minute (actually, that is my philosophy for everything I do :/ ). Otherwise, there may be a short time where you don't have a camera at all. ;(
01/03/2006 11:09:58 AM · #23
Maybe I'll put it all on Ebay at a very high price and see what happens. There really aren't that many of them available and Ebay can do some crazy prices when people don't do their homework or really want something.

If I don't get my price, then I keep it.

I had the same Camera before I got my 20D and I wanted to get my Canon 20D faster so I sold my Sony 717 on Ebay with all my accessories for $730.00 CAN which I though was good.

and I have not missed my Sony at all...the Canon 20D is great!

Keep it. Even though you may not use it very often there still will be situations where you'd rather take it than the SLR.

I still have my Canon G3 and do use it occasionally. Mind you I still have a film SLR that I also use occasionally (for the features not on my digital SLR).
