I am on the point to invest in a flash unit for my Canon 350D.
My dealer, and photog companion, insists to aquire a Metz unit vs the Canon 580EX. His main argument being the possibility to change the module and adapt it to other brand's cameras. He also insisits on a more accurate auto exposure and ease to use.
Some other friends have concerns about the bult quality vs canon. Any thoughts? Thank you!

I don't know anything about Canon flash units, but I'm a very happy user of a Metz 44 AF 4i N flash. I would've liked to have bought the Nikon SB-600 at least, but Metz unit was about half the price and looked good enough. It performs very well in every way and with a simple home-made diffuser produces beautiful results. I guess the 54 series would be as good. Although I'm no expert on Metz products, as far as I know the MZ series is designed for film cameras, whereas the AF series is optimized for digital cameras. Therefore you might want to make sure that the MZ flash is compatible with your digital camera, if you should choose to buy it. |

I had the Canon 550 when they D30 was first introduced and hated it from day one, it was erratic and unreliable so I went back to the Metz 60 CT-4 without the TTL adapter. I have always used Metz CT 60-1s and loved them when I was still shooting film. Once you master the Metz you will never look back.

You should have no doubts about the Metz in terms of build quality, if anything, the Metz units are even sturdier than the units Canon produces.
I would not hesitate in the least to buy a Metz flash.

I hve a metz 54MZ4 on a canon and love it. I have not used a 550ex but once, but the metz certainly has lots fewer dials and such.
Feature wise the canon has the master/slave capability. I don;t think the metz has this.
The metz has an Auto mode that blows the canon away.
The shoe thing i suppose has advantags if you switch brands - not many peope do. It is handy is that metz does comeot with updated shoes (the chip is in teh shoe) so if canon doeas an eTTL3 or someting your flash can be updated for $80 (as opposed to $500 or whatever a 580ex costs as it is the upgrade to teh 550ex). A changeable shoe is a plus when selling the metz, if you ever do, as anyone can can use it just by getting the right shoe.

Thank you very much.
I almost made my mind on it. I'll let you know.
@Tycho - but Metz unit was about half the price and looked good enough - It's almost the same price, this is why I'm asking.

I/m having the same problem with studio flash...
Alien Bee 400s kit (2 lights) or Paterson Interfit Stellar 600 kit (2 300ws strobes, etc).
I keep wavering back and forth.
