Hey folks!

I don't know about anyone else but I'm not the best speller in world. It would be super helpful if the photo comments and forum message boxes had a spell check feature. Anyone else agree?

Would this be a possibility?

Thanks!

I don't think that would be a good idea... although that's a personal opinion. anyway, most of us can read typo :)

I have never had a hang up about spelling on the web. If you use the wrong "to" or the wrong your (or you're) who cares. I still know what you mean. The only time someone corrects someones spelling or grammar is when they are losing an argument. They always go for the spelling trump card. The last bastion of hope for the truly pathetic... LOL

Like I said, as longe ass eye no whachu meen, duz it really matta?

I think if it can be done easily, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Yea, I can read typos, and yes, I make a lot of them!!! It's not that I'm a bad speller, I am just an apathetic one!

It matters if incorrect spelling is like fingernails on a chalkboard to you. ;-D I don't correct anyone, though. I just sit in front of my monitor and cringe.

I take it back! you need an AOL spell checker!
01/23/2003 03:47:22 PM · #8
type it in microsoft word and the spell check and the paste it into the forum or message box

That's what I currently do. Not convenient.

I would love to have a spell check function. I'll tell you why: my spelling is kinda crappy (French is my first language), but I really do a lot of typos when commenting on the pictures ... trying to comment as much as I can, I'm not going to spend double time checking for mistakes.

I dunno, I think it would be nice.

i think the point is that it's not that big of a deal to the people that read the comments/forums. i think 99.99% of the time people can interpret what is written

Sometimes a simple spelling error completely changes or reverses the meaning of the statement.

I also am building a collection of spelling errors which are NOT caught by spell checkers. So far, my favorite is when a local paper reported on a meeting looking into a school board junket to Central America; the meeting was considered a waste of time since the trip "was already a fete accompli."

Ditto!!! I'm an ex-typing teacher and I pick up on typos more than most. It just drives me NUTS!!!

Didn't somebody post a link to a spell checker that plugs into IE?
I didn't pay it much attention because I don't use IE and I can spell (and yes, there probably is a connection there :P ).

Can we have the Canadian / British spelling correction for words too?
- Colour and color
- Meter and metre
- Province, as well as providence
- Program and programme
- Labour or labor
- Cancelled for canceled
- Catalogue for catalog
- We can keep criticize, rather than criticise, just because I like Zeds, and not Zees

I have a difficulty with slang and jargon too. Let’s have it catch terms like “typo” and change it to “typographical error”. While we are at it, we could completely obliterate those nasty little net lingo words, such as LOL, IMO, IMHO, PITA, YOYO, and more. There is simply no limit to the language tools that we need – capitalization, grammar, punctuation, etc. (oops, of course I mean excreta).

Can we have a thesaurus too? Gosh, I am just too excited or thrilled or energized for wordsâ€Â¦LOL, or should I say, lots of laughs (sorry!)

No, you should say Laugh Out Loud. (That's why I don't usually use those abbreviations!)

I wonder if that is another Canadian versus American thing?

Just an interjection--Canadians are Americans.

Just my 2¢, but I'd rather deal with the occasional typo than the overhead time for server-side spellchecking every time I tried to submit a comment.

If it were a plugin for the browser there would be no server side spell checking. One would actually have to submit the information to the server first in order for a server side spell check to take place. The plug in could be ran from the users desktop and would be installed upon first use. There is a really nice one called WSpell. Because it is a plugin and resides on the users PC (MAC) it allows you to custimize your own dictionary.

Just my 2 cents. :-)

Wacky Bill -- that's a good idea ... anyone who knows (or should know) that they need a spell checker should add it to their browser.
It's too much to expect this site to do that for you. Besides, you'll need it when using other sites, anyway.

P.S. Canadians are not Americans, except when they move south to earn more $$$

(Poor northern Canadian)
