Have just bought a Nikon d50 (with the 18-70 lens) and am a very happy man so far :o)
Have been playing around with the settings etc and wanted to know if anyone has had a play with the Image Optimization settings?
Is this best left set to 'Normal' or is it just a matter of taste?

depends --
if you are shooting jpg or raw
raw you may change the settings after or undo your camera settings
jpg you are stuck with what you shot at
Personally -- i shoot with everything 'off' except WB which i set at auto (A)
and post process everything -- but i only shoot in raw ...

Set it to normal for the most part. Anything that the other settings you can do in post-processing even to JPEG's...
I disagree with ralphnev's opinion in shooting everything RAW. I feel it clogs the workflow, and I've personally NEVER made an error so huge while shooting JPEG that if I shot RAW it would have saved it...if you're making errors that big, you need more practice and RAW isn't going to save you.

| I shoot everything RAW as well, I like as little compression in my originals as possible. Shooting JPG you are destroying a little bit of every image right in the camera. |

speaking from just D100 experiance
"errors" in exposure is not why i shoot raw -
butmany reasons
I.E. i don't like in camera sharpening (it is not usm) ((and it is really a bad (IMO) to double sharpen)
increased dynamic range (12/8 bits)
WB is (IME) not bang on all the time
i do push my images occasionally / but certainly not all ...
i used to have alot of normal settings but i found that i 'undid them' to change the sharpening and etc ... why redo the effort ..
but whatever works for you ...

i shoot in RAW+JPG because i often have to blow up my images later and it's nice to know that i've got a larger version if i need it.
with the +JPG option you can quickly do some edits on the JPG and upload (for a PaD or competition entry) but still have the NEF file for later work.
i've also recently discovered that PSCS2 has a really nice option that let's you interpret your RAW as a larger-megapixel file, which is nice for us 6.1Mp guys. |

never used the RAW+JPG (d100 didn't have it)
will have to look into that for d200 ..
will need bigger memory cards. .. |

Just use RawShooters Premium and forget the raw+jpeg issue. It's a waist of CF space. You can use the fast proof tool and in less than a second you have a small jpeg to post. For example I shoot weddings in raw. When I want to do contact sheets I do them in Photoshop in 20x30cm prints where I put 9 images in each, with the mumbers in the down side of them. Iopen the raw files in RSP and then do a rough slection and the ones I want I do fast proofs of them, with 1200 pixels on the long side. I put about 300 proofs in less than 5 minutes. |

| I was shooting raw+jpg for a while but after converting some of the raw files to jpg I realized just how crappy the jpg files were straight out of the camera. now I just shoot raw and get a few more pictures on my card. For quick proofs I use Photoshop Elements 4, it reads the d70 raw files just fine and allows for easy printing when in a hurry. |

| to clarify: i like RAW+JPG 'cause i can cruise through the JPGs really quickly in ACDSee, which won't read the RAWs. maybe with some other tool i don't need the JPGs. |
