Happy New Year all
I got home from my NYE party this morning around 2am, early by most standards late for an old fart like me. I checked my scores and low and behold another challenge, âThe Best of 2005.â Wow. I started going through some of my pictures in my archives and got to about June when I was just too tired to continue.
I have taken so many pictures in 2005 and to pick a favorite is going to be a challenge in and of itself then to post process it to a point where it will score high on DPC could take a month. I only have 15 days what am I going to do? Well it will be fun I am sure, I am also sure there will be 500 entries. If this is the case maybe we will have a bit more then a week to vote on each and every one to be fair.
What do you think?

you beat me to it, mike, starting this thread ;-)
yes, it is subjective!
the most important thing is deciding, up front, whether you want to enter a shot that will be competitive in a monster challenge (700+ entries), or if you want to enter your favorite shot and hope for the best.
a lot of feelings got hurt last year when people entered their favorite shot of the year, only to have it not be everyone else's favorite. the reality is that this is another challenge, and if you want to score well, you had better have a great shot.
good luck to all who enter!

I don't remember that... I was in 319th place and damn proud not to be last with all the great talent I was competing against... |

I can already tell I must have learned something over the past year. I remember last year having 2 or 3 photos in consideration for my "best." This year it will be much more difficult, with probably a dozen or so that are my "best" for different reasons.

Last year I was limited by having had several computer incidents that wiped out my portfolio. I have a MUCH bigger selection to go through this year! |

Since I only started shooting at the end of 2005 as it is..LOL..I am just entering my favorite, and not necessarily am looking for a win. I just don't have the equipment for those high-falooting landscapes some do. So I am entering this particular shot chosen just basically because I can. I know it won't finish last, but I am sure it won't top ten.
For those that are stumped on what to enter, I would say just enter what you like the most, and I wouldn't try to appeal to the masses on this one for the purposes of a high score. A ribbon? That would be a bonus, but I am definately modest enough to say that I won't be top dog on this one by any means. This one I am entering for the pure fun of just being in the competition.

It won't be all that subjective beginning the 16th of January. LOL |

Oh man, (salivating), I think I've narrowed it down to between 6 and 10 shots. Picking one, however, is going to be tough. I feel a slight advantage over people who have been here for the whole year as I have 6 months of pictures nobody has seen at all... |

Actually, I just changed mine. I forgot you couldn't reenter a previous photo. The previous one I entered was dq'ed because it had the wrong date and time. I figured now was my chance since it was doing so well. LOL...
Oh well, I just whipped out my 5 cd's full of originals and picked one. I think it will be a crowd pleaser, but still, just for fun. LOL....

Of my 7 highest-rated images, 5 were taken with a Nikon Coolpix. Megapixels don't mean a heck of a lot at the 640 pixel size we are limited to. In some extreme cases, there's a distinct advantage to larger sensors for noise and luminance concerns, but this isn't really a major factor day in and day out IMO. My portfolio is FULL of very decent landscapes shot with a Fuji 4900z and a Coolpix 5700...

Hey Rose, I was just thinking, when I take pictures I do a few of each shot. I would try different shutter speeds or f stops so even though I have entered one of the type of shot, I have another with different EXIF and all. So if you really like what you had, I guess if you have a different view or a completely different picture of the same subject you could enter it. Just something I am floating around in my head.
I don't think it should be blatantly obvious to an existing shot on your profile or challenge entries, but a different focal length or angle or brightness? Maybe?

Every challenge that you enter is subjective.
