OK, after shopping a lot, and waiting until my wife was in bed to pull the trigger, I finally went for it. Here's the laptop I got:

Intel Pentium M processor 740 (1.73 GHz)
Windows XP Home Edition
15.4 inch display
1 GB DDR2 SDRAM (yup, 1 whole gig of RAM)
80 GB Hard Drive
Internal 56K Modem/network card
Internal wireless 802.11a/b/g, 54Mbps
8x CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with dual-layer DVD+R capability

All this from Dell for $829, with free shipping, using the Inspiron B130 as a base, and upgrading pretty much everything. I couldn't find anything even close to these specs for this price anywhere else. With these specs, I bet I could even do photo editing on this thing.

Actually, I've done PS on this laptop also (similar, but 512mb), but I had to hook it up to a monitor. Little slow, but still good.

I do all my editing on my Dell Inspiron 1150. The screen is a little small, and a bit out of calibration, but even with only 512 RAM, it works really well for me.
Sounds like a sweet system, you should have fun with it!

Ouch! I just got a Dell 700m configured the same (except I also I upgraded the processor to a 2GHz). They gave me $350 off and I paid $1,500!

I guess it cost to make them lighter and smaller. The 700m is a 12.1" screen and weighs in at 3.8 lbs. Wanted something easy to travel with. So far I love it. Enjoy when it shows up. BTW - mine came a few days faster than they had projected so be ready.

I'm really hoping mine comes a few days earlier, too. They are saying the ship date is January 11th. My wife can attest to the fact that I am not a patient man when it comes to new, fun purchases.

Steve,
My estimated ship date (with 3 to 5 day shipping) was 1/3 when I ordered on 12/23. Dell shipped my laptop on Thursday 12/29 from Patrick, NV using UPS and it arrived at my office in Pasadena on Friday 12/30.

I hope they are that quick with yours.
