I got a Tamron 70-210 2.8. I have borrowed the 'regular' tamron 1.4 and 2x TCs from a friend.

I think i want a 1.4x of my own - which one is best and why? (cost, weight. compatibility, lens coatings...?)

I know you lose a stop with a 1.4x. My camera still reads 2.8, just hte shutter speed drops - so what is the ap then? for DOF etc, is it still 2.8, as the diaphragm blades didn't move...so what mental gymnastics must i do to figure out the results of using a TC? I mean, i up the ap to 5.6 or somthing and get more DOF - but what is the true dof? (wide open is is 2.8 or 4?)

Also, the tamron is older and loses contrast at wider aps, probably due to no coatings on the rear element and a shiny sensor instead of dull film - will a TC 'fix' this? (assuming it's coated)

OK, one last time - no resonses and I'll kill this thread! I'm not kidding. It's young, it's murder, but i'll do it if i have to!

I believe that the aperture wide open is actually f4 with the TC attached (focal length increased, but absolute aperture unchanged), but the combination is not reporting the 'true' aperture to the camera. Not all lens/TC combinations will do. My 28-135 would not report correctly to the camera in this respect, whereas the 70-200 would.

I used the Kenko Pro 300 1.4 TC with my 70-200 f4 and noticed no degradation in image quality. Not too expensive. I got mine for £130 from a UK supplier, but the same can be bought form a Hong Kong Supplier a bit cheaper.

Anyway, I want to kill a thread, I haven't done it for a couple of days.

edit: stupid spelling mistakes.
