These two crops are from the same shot and I was wondering which one most would prefer. I know that her facing the open space is more in line with the norm but something about the open space to the right gives me more of a feel of the past being behind her. Trying to learn all I can so any comments and critiques will be appreciated (on processing too please).
She is carrying our first child and was emitting quite a bit of emotion that I tried to capture. Thanks so much for looking.

I like version 2 except for the brightness in the lower left corner. The crop on version 1 seems a little awkward IMO. I do like the processing a lot, it adds to the emotive nature of the shot. Good job! |

Hi Phil. Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your first. I personally like the 1st one better than the second. The lightness behind her is so strong it tends to pull my eyes that direction rather than on her face.
edited...I didn't look at the numbers you put on the picture. The one I was referring to above is the one you numbered 2 but the first thumb in here.

I always prefer to see the subject facing the negative space instead of the negative space being behind them. It just seems to flow better. That's why I think the one you've numbered (2) is more pleasing to look at.
Congratulations on the birth of your child. |

The crop of "(2)" is very good.
However, I found your post processing surprising.
You are talking about the emotions of a mother-to-be. I can relate to them all very well as I have two children myself.
I know about the negative emotions but overall I would hope that you two are excited and mostly positive, so why portray her as if she was facing certain doom or was seriously depressed?
I know some people love dark, gloomy photos, but I only like them when the reason/subject calls for that sort of treatment. Personally I would portray her to look forward to baby, not dread it. |

Facing left = remembering past/slightly negative feeling.
Facing left& out of frame =past is gone and I am tortured.

You're absolutely correct Beetle. I originally had the photo titled "Unfaithful" but it was a bit too close to home for me (I hope she wasn't unfaithful lol). I should have titled it that and left the comment box alone. The more I look at it, I see that the emotion that stands out more than anything looks to be sadness. You would really have to know her to know that she's really a thinker and she wasn't sad at all. Thanks so much for the comments and critiques and I will definitely rename this shot. I truly appreciate your input. BTW. She's due in June and I couldn't be more happy, scared, excited, nervous, unknowing......well, you get the picture. :>)

Phew, that's good to know. You just put a big smile on my face.
Enjoy all those feelings, even the scary ones. It all seems to be over oh so quickly and they're teenagers.... ggggrrrrrrrrr!!
All the best to you both. |

Thanks so much for the replies - you've all been a great help.
And Beetle - you had to bring up the teenager thing didn't you? :>)

LOL I am soooooo sorry (not)!
Actually I am being nice to you. When you are standing in front of the change table, marvelling at how someone that small and that precious can smell THAT bad, try to remember my words.
In hindsight, even "nightmare diapers" are a walk in the park compared to teenagers with attitude *g*
See, I'm just helping you enjoy the joys of having a baby in your life! |
