Hi guys. I'm on a 5 day holiday and decided I would dedicate some serious time to my webpage. I've been bored with my very dated layout forever, but everytime I have tried to improve it I get a huge javascripthtml headache and give up. Today, I gave it almost 12 straight hours and .... guess what?.... I think I did it!
Please have a look and tell me what you think....

In general it's working pretty well. Howvere the links int he portfolio are leading us to the same-size image on a generic gray page, not to the larger version we see in the sideshow.
On your toolbox page the color of the type is grotesquely bad, very difficult to read and very unprofessional looking. You'd be better off losing the black on that page and giving us a more professional looking list of do's and dont's.
Also, in general the large images seem to be oversharpened to me, and I use a CRT monitor; I shudder to think what they'll look like on an LCD monitor with higher contrast.
Still and all, it's a great improvement.

Hi Cindi,
I like the site, but with my resolution set @ 1152x864 I have to scroll..
I think most people run their resolution @ 1024x768 which would require even more scrolling, even full screen..
Just a thought. |

Nice site, no scrolling required :D Seriously, I like large images, but don't think they really need to be that large as a default.
The slideshow was skipping to the next image at times before the current image was completely displayed.

Thanks for having a look Robert. I made the links to same-sized copies to discourage/prevent image theiving, perhaps I should just drop all links?!?!
I do agree about the oversharpening on some of them, I noticed it too after I batch processed them, I will go back and individually edit and code those later.
And thanks, I hadn't even thought of the toolbox page but you are quite right about the colors, I will fix that now! :)

I noticed the oversharpening on some of the photos too. Particularly the green waterscape pic.
Not sure what kind of monitor you're working on but I hate scrolling- well I don't mind up & down but your portraits & fine art I have to scroll left to right to see all the images.
I like the setup & it's very manageable :0) |

| I'm not qualified to critique a website; however, I clicked on it out of curiosity and had to chuckle at the main photo (remembering how Ken and Robert butchered that beautiful capture!!!!) |

cindi, i don't really understand. soms photos are clickable, some are not. the photos i can click, open in the same window, same size as on the main page, but less compressed.
I can't seem to find the slideshow or larger photos??
edit: found them! but some are out of their perspective.. :(

Ugh! It hits me now (because of your comments) that I've sized it precisely to MY monitor size, which is 21". I don't have to scroll at all, but obviously others do :( crap! lol

Removed all of the links in the galleries, less confusing that way I think.

Cindi,
Nice site, but it's way too wide on my 1024x768 monitor.
I'm running Firefox 1.5.

Yah, too wide.
And something I found funny was the monkey in Portraits. I think I actually chortled. Snorted. Guffawed. Giggled.

Looking at it on the 21" at 1290 x 1024 it looks real nice. I like the redesign. Looking at it on the 19" at 1024x768, the screen is too big - as in I have to scroll to see pics...
I like the auto-play feature and basic design though... |

Fixed the height problem, but will have to resize all pics before I can fix the width. Any better?

Hey Cindi. I would be more than happy to help you any way I can. A lot of photographers are using the simpleviewer which I think looks really nice and easy to see the pictures. simpleviewer Skiprows is one that comes to mind because Dakota and I recently discussed it. Skiprows If this is something you'd be interested in or if you find another layout you like I would be happy to help you.
edited to add: I am heading to bed (Louisiana and gambling wore me out) but if I can help you at all just PM me or email me at bren@brenburrill.com and I will get back with you tomorrow.

Nice site. Nice photos.
Slide show runs slower than my download so I never see a full photo on auto.
"Before your sitting ..." guidelines are a bit wordy. Edit to cut in half and they will be easier to read ... and more likely to be followed. |

Thanks for the insight guys. Bren, I may need to contact you for some help, but I'm going to take today to have another go at it. I'll have a look at simpleviewer. The one I used ISN'T SIMPLE.... or atleast wasn't to me! lol

It has a usuability issue regarding the horizontal scrolling. Not a good idea to have people srolling in general. You should really have flexible/scalable width or a fixed width site of 764px, so that all viewers are able to enjoy the site.
Also I would say that your thumbs are too big.
Hope that helps?

Ok, I've downloaded Simpleviewer and printed some instructions so .... here goes another total re-do. If today is like yesterday, I probably won't look away from my puter again for the next 12 hours or so.
I'll keep all of your comments/tips in mind while I redesign.
wish me luck! I really am allergic to html, but I'm trying!

Cindi just give me a yell today if I can help. I am cleaning house and taking down Christmas decorations but will check in regularly. I have never used the simpleviewer but read through the directions and it sounds pretty easy.
Good luck today! |

Few things I noticed
>Menu on the left could be made much smaller
>Logo is overlapping the slide show and images that are horizontal
>For people like me who have the graphic interface for WinXP turned off, the buttons on the bottom look horrible
>Framing on the slide show looks redundant (referring to the external frame that takes up a lot of screen space)
>Images in the portfolio are still clickable and they open up in a blank page in the same window with no buttons to take me back to the home page or go to the next shot

| Have been thinking about you slaving over the website redo. You should probably take a break and have a glass of wine, beer, or whatever about now. :) I have been cleaning house all day and just sat down with a VO and Coke and heading to take me a hot bath. All my inside Christmas decorations are packed and in their place. I was just checking in to see how you were doing. Hope all is going well. Webdesigning can be so stressful. |

Bren, your site is so gorgeous, I would love to give mine that "zing", any tips? (remember I'm allergic to html).
