Thanks for helping. I am having some problems with composition in my photos. Can you help with this one?
Also, what would you say was the major other flaws? (i.e. Focus etc)
Thanks in advance

Hi jrjr. You make much better photos than me, so I don't know if I will help you, but nevertheless, I left you a comment. |

Don't forget that most images lose sharpness significantly when downsized. A touch of USM to this really perked it up a lot.
There are plenty of lovely shots in your portfolio.

USM sharpened it but the bottles are soft in focus because of depth of field. The red christmas ball is in focus and the bottles would have been much sharper if in that same plane. Even with some USM the lettering on the bottles is still soft. I think I would have lined the bottles at angle to the plane of focus and then put either the first or middle bottle in the plane of focus and placed the christmas decoration on the same plane as the bottle that's in sharp focus. I've posted the image with a tighter crop which the image probably didn't need. The bottle caps are still very soft but it did help with the lettering although they are still a bit soft too. I think the placement of the bottles onto the plane of focus would have helped immensely...one thing though one of the bottle caps gives and indication of motion blur but that may be caused by the blurred christmas light in the background...at least that's what I saw...

One last thing, the end bottles are leaning in toward the center which if you don't want that effect caused by shooting slightly upward with a wide angle. This can be adjusted using the perspective filter in CS2. This is a great shot...just needs a little work. |

Can anyone explain to me why the necks of the bottles look out of focus when the bodies are just fine? Is it because of the lights behind the bottles? |

I took a stab at this one, with mixed results. I don't know if the originally posted image has already been sharpened in an attempt to "gain focus", but it really can't handle any more sharpening. I cropped from the right a bit, I used skew control to straighten the bottles up some, I used focus magic to make it as sharp as I could without extreme artifacts, I used neat image to smooth it out some... For what it's worth:

Everyone Thank You. This was my first entry with my new camera-- before I knew how to use it. (Still don't but getting better).I have learned a lot form your comments and efforts. Two bad there isn't a 2nd chance run-off where the same challenge repeats but you can only enter the same idea that you originally did but IMPROVED. The winner would get a consolation ribbon or a "congratulations you learned something ribbon".
Any way, thanks for taking the time.
