Do any of you share problems with white balance on your camera? I have been having touble with getting the white balance right on my camera in tough lighting situations. It's already my Achilles Heal the tough lighting but this seems to compound my problems. I asked my editor at the paper and she said a couple other photogs have had problems but, I can't seem to contact them to get any info.

No problem but then again I shoot in RAW so I have some ability to correct on conversion.

Automatic white balance tends to get confused, but I shoot in flash mode 95% of the time anyway. Seems to do OK.

My main issue is autofocus - It's hard to tell what it's focusing on until its too late.

I shoot mostly JPG. I never use Automatic WB. As default I use "Cloudy -3". In tough lighting situations I use custom WB - it's very, very easy to set, and it works well.

You can set the camera to use the same area for autofocus (e.g., the middle point); that way you'll always know where it is focusing. You can use that point for focusing then recompose (move sideways or up/down a bit) before shooting. Works well except for very close macros, where you want to have pin-sharp focus and recomposing moves the reference so it often doesn't work.

When I shot for my school newspaper, I had problems with one of the D2Hs's - Even on custom white balance, no matter the scene, it came out wrong (way too much yellow in this case). Anyway, I found that I could get it to work again by resetting the camera settings (I think its done on the D70 by pressing and holding the bracketting and metering buttons )

If the problem is actually with the camera, that might help, but then again might not.

I'm not sure if this may be the case, but when I owned my Nikon 5700 I had a problem with my pictures always have a tint (if I remember correctly it was blue)even when I used a preset white balance. After contacting Nikon they told me that if I was using a CF card that was not approved or recommended by Nikon for use with the 5700 it could cause the problem. I went back to the card that came with the camera and sure enough, that was the case. I don't know why it would make a difference since it is only recording information, but it did.

I don't really have a problem with my WB, I normally check before taking photos what setting would be appropriate at the time.

For most of my outside shooting I leave it on Auto White Balance. In the studio I always, always, set my own custom white balance. I haven't yet run into major problems. I've been shooting in RAW more and more, so I'm able to do minor adjustments in post-processing.

I also make sure that every single time I take out the camera to start shooting, I do a reset to defaults (with two buttons that have green dots next to them) and then reapply whatever settings I want for the current situation. I've learned the hard way after doing a lot of shots with a custom WB setting from the previous shoot.
