I do quite a bit of wedding photography, but don't share much of it on the net. I only put photos on the web, if I have the model's permission. However, I would like to offer some advice. Try a Google search for "wedding photographer" (use the quotes in the search) and look at some of the portfolios on thier sites.

Any ideas of what type of site the wedding is going to be at? What time of day? Any sort of theme for the wedding?

You have a year to:
buy new lenses - you have nothing fast enough for an indoor wedding - get a 18-50 2.8 or a 28-80 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8, preferably VR.
get a SB800 and learn to use it like your sex organ - that is, without thinking about it. You must get 95% of the pics properly exposed. You get no second chances.
Buy a second camera body, have 3 batteries for both camera, 4 sets for hte flash, a back up flash, a flash bracket's a good idea too. Learn to shoot and process RAW, and get 5 Gb of CF cards, 8Gb is better.

Since you have large groups to shoot...get some strobes - SB800 or more and you'll need a pocket wizard to trigger them - other folks will be taking photos so slaving them optically is a no-can-do.

Go shoot 3 or 4 weddings - there is very little chance you'll do anything artistic, creative etc the first time out - your brain will be very busy with 1,000,000 other things. Hell, even trying to remember who and how to do the group poses will overwhelm you. At least attend that many to see the flow of things, to have a clue as to where a photog stands to get shots, etc. You can sneak into most any church wedding ceremony and be fine. Crashing a reception is tougher ;)

Got a few books on shooting weddings and read them. 3 times.

You will not have any fun at your cousin's wedding - you will be working.

Wow!! lol =) thanks....Im looking into a few new batteries...now on the Lens wich one would be the most improtant? Im looking in to a flash as well one of the wire less ones.... Not sure wich one? Got a 1gb card and a 256mb card.

exif data is included in photo.

edit to add: I may have been to drunk and may have had the camera on auto. I don't remember and it was not a paid thing AND I'm not a photographer. I only played the part on TV.

I shot 2 weddings last year. SHOOT RAW. It'll save you but in many ways (WB, exposure for sure). I shot 280 on the ifrs one (all day) and filled a 1Gb card on teh second one, but had to switch to JPG part way thru. it was outdoors so WB at least was OK.

280 shots, and the camera will be ON all day - so you will need at least a second battery. a flash may do 100 shots on one set - so have 3 or 4. disposables work, but don't recycle the flash as fast.

280 shots at 5.4Mb each...you can do the math. I have since picked up more cards (watch for sales at the big box/office stores, rebates, etc.)

flash - you cannot shoot a wedding without one. You will have to get good with it - so take 300 shots for practice at least, over a few weeks and study what works and doesn't. Get Gary Fong's Lightsphere 2 (google it). Well worth the $40.

Lenses...tamron 28-75 2.8. I like wider so i chose the sigma 18-50 2.8 EX. you can make do with that one lens. a 70-200 2.8 is the other one, but unless you have 2 bodies (one can be film, or borrowed) changeing lenses on the run so to speak sucks. unless you have shot a few weddings you will not have time (aka experience) to find the time to do it. A second body/flash is for back up as much as a second lens. 20 minutes before the wedding or in the middle of the processional is no time to run out and buy a camera or batteries etc if your;s fail.

so that infers you get a belt system to caryy things. Sigma's EX lenses come with cases that can be put on your belt. my memory card wallet (which holds 2 sets of flash and 1 camera battery and 12 cards) fits my belt too (by tenba for $12). Both very handy to have and i have used them in museum, etc so i don't have to carry the backpack.

Holy crap, Matt. No wonder he's gonna like those. They are some of the top photographers in the US or the world. Those folks take down $10K per wedding or better in some cases. Getting ideas from them is definitely something I would like to do myself but the OP needs to be realistic when viewing some of this work and realize that comparing his work to these would be like me comparing myself to Peyton Manning when I go out to play football on Thanksgiving afternoon with some of the guys. These folks aren't just professionals; they are, in some instances, the consummate wedding photogs. They spend BIG BUCKS on equipment and lots of time perfecting their craft. I shoot numerous weddings a season like you do and I'm still getting my legs under me in certain wedding circumstances.

Great links, tho.

Agreed - I know a bunch of these guys as people too so I like to post their terrific work! :) He asked for ideas and he may as well do "his version" of the best.

Comparing his work yes, but when you go out on Thanksgiving, you DO try to emulate Peyton right? You do a nice little 3 or 5 step drop even though you don't really know why and even though you then terminally take 4 or 5 other steps? The better you emulate Peyton, the better your team will be. The better he emulates Gino or Todd, the better his shots will be, ja? I do agree about expectations - he won't create work that looks like theirs at his first wedding.

Agreed - though Gino basically shoots 2 20Ds and a couple L's, nothing else special. Some of those guys (Andy Marcus with Fred Marcus Photography esp) could light up the Superbowl with his lights. He must setup like 10 580EX around the room! But guys like Parker, Gino - they're just flyin like me.

Wow...thanks for the list Mavrik...many of those sites are really inspiring! I have never really aspired in my life to be a paid wedding photographer ( a lot of work and responsibility ) but those sites just make me want ot go shoot a wedding for the hell-of-it!

I have some of my wedding shots up now - check the my portfoliio link in my sig.

Yeah, once you see NICE wedding pics, it shows how high the 'art of photography' can go. HS Seniors pay more, but the work is not as demanding/challengeing/satisfying.

I LOVE event photography...something so real versus the stuff I have to do everyday that is so graphics/studio/design oriented.

I shoot non-profit events like fundraisers for childrens cancer research or March of Dimes for free (It's my way of giving to non-profits since I am too broke to give money). Non-profits don't have any money to pay for photography and photographers who make a living shooting weddings and such will not give their time in my area.

If anybody within a 3 hour drive needs help on an event...I will help...I love em!
