My brother is a painter - he is looking for a digi that will take good pictures of paintings (so, low-light, good color, etc). We've been looking mainly at Canon - the G6 is a bit pricey and bulky, the A520 is just a little too cheezy, and in between we've found the SD400 but it's TINY and it says in a few reviews that low-light is a big issue.

So what I'd like to know is:

What's a good camera for photographing paintings in a low-light studio situation, as well as some night photography (architecture, urban, etc)?

He's not willing to go the DSLR route...but what's important is the ability to capture true color...and while it's not necessarily low-lighting he'll have issues with, he just won't have access to photography lights.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Katy

The G6 is around 600, and the A520 is around 200, so anything in between!

Thanks for gettin' back so quick :)

You will not be able to beat a DSLR when it comes to low-light & High ISO photography. For $600 you can easily get a Canon 300D with the kit lens that will give you room to grow and produce superb low noise/high ISO shots in low light.

Look at the Olympus 500UZ. Reviews for the camera looks great and so far this is something I have seen closest to the G6.

Almost all P&S will have noise more than the DSLRs, but with a tripod and low ISO these P$S do a decent job of capturing true color.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the DSLR, he's decided, is just not an option. He really just wants a high-end point'n'shoot. Plus, he's travelling a lot, and doesn't want the bulk.

Anyway, we appreciate the advice!

Excellent, thank you! We're looking at it now on B&H :)

More suggestions welcome, of course!

being an artist myself I have had to photograph work from time to time and even in the brightness conditions its hard to get work to look the same, or rather it looks the same but on a pc screen certain paintings look dull. So you may want to edit the levels, brightness and constrast but if you go too far it ends up looking nothing like the original work, although better digitally (least that happens to me sometimes) so you need to make sure you dont overedit your images and this is easy to do.

Noise isnt the problem Ive found, its lighting conditions and over editing that gives me problems, but then again its not like Ive used pro lighting.
